Clark Mell Eichelberger (1896-1980) was a lecturer on national and international affairs with the Radcliffe Chautauqua System from 1922 to 1928. He was appointed director of the mid-West office of the League of Nations Association in 1928 and became director of the national organization in 1934. The name of the organization was changed to the American Association of the United Nations (A.A.U.N.) in 1945 and Eichelberger continued to serve as executive director until 1964. When the A.A.U.N. was merged with the United States Committee for the United Nations to form a new organization called the United Nations Association of the U.S.A., Eichelberger served as vice-president of the organization until 1968. He became increasingly involved with the Commission to Study the Organization of Peace which he helped to found in 1939 and became director (1939-1964), chairman (1964-1968) and executive director (1968-1974) of the Commission. He was associated with or helped to establish several other U.S. and international peace and world government organizations. Eichelberger also served as consultant to the League of Nations Secretariat, the U.S. delegation to the San Francisco Conference in 1945, and was a member of the committee which created the first draft of the charter of the United Nations. He authored several books on the United Nations. Collection consists of personal papers of Clark M. Eichelberger and records of organizations of which he was an official. Personal papers contain his writings, research notes, sound recordings of his radio broadcasts about the United Nations, oral history interviews, and personal miscellany including papers relative to his career as lecturer with the Radcliffe Chautauqua System. Bulk of the organizational records consists of records, 1920-1944, of the League of Nations Association; records, 1942-1965, of its successor, American Association for the United Nations; and records, 1939-1981, of the Commission to Study the Organization of Peace. There are also records of the American Union for Concerted Peace Efforts, Americans United for World Organization, Citizens for Victory, Committee to Defend America by Aiding the Allies, and Free World Association. Mary Maverick Lloyd (1906-1976) was an American writer and activist for peace and world federalism. She wrote for the Federated Press and the Works Progress Administration's Federal Writers' Project, and worked for the Campaign for World Government, Action for World Federation, and Conseil Mondial pour l'Assemblée Constituante des Peuples. The Mary Maverick Lloyd papers date from 1904 to 1976 and contain correspondence, writings, diaries, financial and real estate documents, photographs, and subject files that document her personal life and work. less

Foster Parmelee was a New York City businessman and adult educator. He was a charter member of the United World Federalists, secretary in the Campaign for World Government, and participated in many conventions of the world government movement. The Campaign for World Government, founded by Rosika Schwimmer and Lola Maverick Lloyd in December 1937, was among the first organizations to advocate a democratic federal world government. The Campaign was divided between two offices in separate cities, with the international campaign headquartered in New York City and the national campaign in Chicago. The New York State Branch of United World Federalists, Inc. was founded in New York City in 1947. It was one of 28 state branches of the organization that promoted world federal government, United Nations reform, legislative resolutions, and amendments to the U.S. Constitution to favor world federal government. The predecessor to the national organization was World Federalists, founded in 1941, which merged with other groups in 1943 to form Federal World Government, Inc., the latter becoming World Federalists, USA in 1945, which in turn became the United World Federalists (U.S.) in 1947. The New York State branch was inoperative after 1952. General correspondence, 1946-1951, is of the editors with individuals and organizations involved in the world federal movement in the U.S. and abroad and with branches and chapters of United World Federalists, Inc. concerning the sponsorship of resolutions and referenda on world government. Other correspondence pertains to advertising and subscriptions. The Willard Straight Post of the American Legion was established in 1920 in opposition to the philosophy expressed by the leaders of the newly organized National American Legion. Collection consists of the papers of Irving M. Engel as member and commander of Willard Straight Post. The American Movement for World Government (AMWG), a not-for-profit organization incorporated in 1954, was founded by William H.D. Cox, Jr. to promote the establishment of federal world government as a necessary condition for world peace and security. Its methods have centered on educational programs, media campaigns, distribution of literature, and contact with groups such as the World Federalists Association and others working for related global interests, including nuclear disarmament, United Nations reform, and human rights. Notable supporters represented in the papers include Isaac Asimov, Ed Asner, Ellsworth T. Carrington, Carl Sagan and Edith Wynner. Carmel Kussman, a psychotherapist, was a board member and officer of the AMWG. The records document the founding and growth of the American Movement for World Government, including its day-to-day operations, media efforts, networking activities and general goals. The collection contains records of the Board of the Directors; correspondence of founder William H.D. Cox and executive director William W. Kenney; and financial and legal records. Newton Diehl Baker (1871-1937) was an American lawyer, political leader and United States Secretary of War during World War I. Collection consists of letters from Baker to Thomas J. Howells of Pittsburgh, Pa., written from Cleveland, Ohio, during Baker's tenure as mayor, from Washington, D.C., while Baker was Secretary of War, and later at Cleveland where Baker practiced law. Letters relate to Baker's life and responsibilities in Cleveland, and to national and international politics including comments on relations between the United States and Mexico, World War I problems, the Training Camp Activities Commission of which Baker was appointed a member, conscientious objectors, the raising of bridges in Pittsburgh, transportation of soldiers home from France, President Wilson's health, the League of Nations, and business and personal affairs. less

The Phelps-Stokes Fund Records contain administrative records including trustee and committee minutes, correspondence, memoranda, financial records, legal documents, speeches, reports, occasional papers, and printed material, such as pamphlets, brochures, clippings, articles, press releases and programs. Records concern the early work of the Fund in researching and supporting education for Africans and African Americans and improvement in housing conditions, through study commissions, reports, and project grants, as well as its engagement in contemporary debates concerning the philosophy and policies of Booker T. Washington and W. E. B. Du Bois. To a lesser extent, the Fund provided early support for surveys of American Indian schools and administration, such as the 1928 Lewis Meriam study and the 1939 Navajo Indian study.
