C. L. R. James was a West Indian scholar, political activist, and writer. Born in Trinidad in 1901, James began his career as a writer and sports journalist. He migrated to Great Britain in 1932, where he published his first major work, The Black Jacobins, in 1938. He became acquainted with Marxism and Trotskyism in 1934, meeting with Leon Trotsky in Mexico in 1938. In New York during the 1940s, he led a small faction of left-wing Communists opposed to the policies of the Communist Party-USA, as well as to some of the main tenets of Marxism-Leninism and Trotskyism. Following his expulsion from the United States in 1953, during the Cold War, James relocated to London, residing at times in Trinidad, where he launched an opposition party against the government of Eric Williams, and in the United States, where he lectured periodically. James died in 1989. The C. L. R. James letters consist mainly of letters written by James to his former wife and political associate, Constance Webb. James's letters discuss a wide variety of subjects including love, politics (especially Marxism), art, history, sports, literature, and popular culture. Also included are miscellaneous letters and organizational materials documenting James's political activities in the United States, 1938-1953; and letters written to Webb, regarding her writings on Richard Wright, from Arna Bontemps, Lawrence Reddick, and Ellen Wright. Numerous letters also discuss the Johnson-Forest Tendency, a faction led by C. L. R. James, under the pseudonym of J. R. Johnson, and Raya Dunayevskaya (also known as Freddie Forest) within the Socialist Workers Party, which later evolved into the group Facing Reality. The letters are voluminous, averaging 20 pages on loose leaf paper; handwritten; undated; and either signed with a majuscule N (first letter of his nickname and political pseudonym Nello) or unsigned. Wilhelm Weitling (1808-1871) was a German-born tailor, inventor and editor. In Germany he worked as a journeyman tailor and was a prominent socialist agitator. After emigrating to the U.S. in 1848, he organized an Arbeiterbund or "Workingmen's League" for skilled craftsmen and established a community in Iowa based on his socio-economic theories. He also was the founder and editor of Die Republik der Arbeiter in New York City from 1850 to 1855. Collection consists of Weitling's correspondence, writings, patents and plans, memorabilia, and miscellaneous papers. Correspondence, 1844-1903, contains letters to and from members of the Weitling family, and correspondence and papers relating to the colonies of the Workingmen's League. Patents and plans, 1861-1868, are for improvements to the sewing machine. Writings include a journal, 1855-1869, and papers on his theories of astronomy. Jonathan Ned Katz (1938 - ) is an independent historian, author, LGBTQ rights advocate, teacher, and textile designer. His father, Bernard Katz (1901-1970), an artist and designer who worked in advertising, was an independent historian of African-American history and jazz music. Jonathan Katz's mother, Phyllis Brownstone Katz, was a magazine editor and co-founder of the Jane Street Community Garden. The Jonathan Ned Katz papers reflect his life and career as an historian, author, LGBTQ rights advocate, teacher, and textile designer. They most heavily document Katz's research and writings on LGBTQ history and activism, and encompass his personal life, family, friends, and the LGBTQ liberation movement. The collection also contains the papers of his parents, Bernard Katz and Phyllis Brownstone Katz. less

The American Fund for Public Service, also known as the Garland Fund, was created in 1922 by Charles Garland to support radical social and economic causes. The board of directors included prominent leaders of the labor movement, the Socialist and Communist parties, and civil rights and minority groups. From 1922 to 1941 the Fund gave nearly two million dollars to a variety of left-wing organizations and enterprises, such as labor unions, cooperatives, schools for workers, radical publications, bail and legal defense funds, and civil liberties, penal reform, and minority rights groups. Records of the American Fund include internal and external correspondence of members of the board of directors, treasurer, and legal counsel, 1922-1941; board of directors meeting minutes, 1922-1941; several committee reports and surveys, 1923-1939; memoranda and reports on policy, 1922-1932; auditor's reports, 1922-1941; lists of appropriations and loans, 1922-1941; and application files for each individual or organization requesting assistance. Grant and loan application files account for 70% of the collection and contain the correspondence of the applicant with the Fund and often a variety of supporting materials such as reports, memoranda, publications, financial records, leaflets, as well as comments by Fund officials regarding the application. Files are divided into two series: Applications Accepted and Applications Refused. less

The Tresca Memorial Committee was formed in 1943 after the assassination of Carlo Tresca, the Italian anti-fascist. The committee conducted memorial meetings in honor of Tresca and supplied materials to researchers. Collection consists of correspondence, memoranda, financial papers, typescript of Tresca's autobiography, and printed matter relating to the Tresca Memorial Committee. Office files, 1944-1956, include correspondence and other records of the committee. Bernard Shaw, born George Bernard Shaw, was an Irish writer of novels, plays, poems, short stories, and literary criticism. The item is a manuscript copy of George Bernard Shaw's letter to the editor of The Times of London, dated February 2, 1909, published on February 5, 1909. Shaw responds to a letter published in The Times on January 29, 1909 by English writer H.W. Mallock. Mallock had criticized remarks on income inequality made by Keir Hardie, M.P. at a Labour Party conference in Portsmouth, England on January 27th, as reported by the press. Shaw defended Hardie and questioned Mallock's knowledge of socialism and political economy in general, initiating an exchange of letters in the newspapers.
