The Leon Danielian Papers document the career of the American ballet dancer and teacher through an extensive set of photographs, as well as a more limited selection of correspondence, clippings, financial records, and teaching materials. Danielian, a native New Yorker of Armenian ancestry, enjoyed an especially varied career as a performer, but is best known for his long association with the Ballet Russe de Monte Carlo. Following his retirement from the stage, Danielian taught ballet for nearly thirty years at the American Ballet Theatre School and the University of Texas at Austin. less

When Sergei Denham died in 1970, the records of the Ballet Russe de Monte Carlo continued to be maintained by Michael Subotin and Watson Washburn at the offices of the Ballet Foundation. Denham's personal papers were given to his daughter, Mrs. Irina Pabst. After the death of Washburn in 1974, the two surviving trustees of the Ballet Foundation, Mrs. Pabst and John Gray, Washburn's nephew, donated the office records and Denham's papers to The Dance Collection in a series of annual gifts. With Subotin's death in 1984, the Ballet Foundation offices on West 57th Street finally closed, and his papers were added to the company records. less

Russian ballerina and dance educator Aleksandra Danilova (1903-1907) was one of the premier dancers of the 20th century, and a collaborator with such icons as George Balanchine, Sergey Diaghilev and Leonide Massine. This collection contains letters, biographical notes, photographs, and other miscellaneous material related to Danilova's personal and professional life. less

The Ballet Foundation gift, donated to the Dance Collection after the Foundation closed in 1984, contains orchestral and part scores for 82 ballets, as well as miscellaneous instrumental and vocal scores. The scores are boxed and grouped alphabetically by ballet title. Within each ballet, the part scores are organized by instrument. Those scores for which there are only one or two parts are also arranged alphabetically by ballet title and are collected in two boxes marked “Miscellaneous Ballet Scores.” Various instrumental and vocal scores which do not relate to specific ballets are arranged alphabetically by composer's name and are located in three boxes marked “Miscellaneous Scores.” less
