The correspondence consists largely of personal letters written by Richard Barstow to his friend Morgan James, as well as some business related correspondence and documents related to litigation. Also includes a script entitled THE RAINBOW YEARS, dated January 30, 1958, for a performance marking the twentieth anniversary of the National Foundation for Infantile Paralysis, i.e. the "March of Dimes." The script features material written for celebrity performers such as Lillian Gish, Eddie Cantor, Don Ameche, and Rudy Vallée. less

Born in Kazan, Russia in 1900, Gard emigrated to the United States in 1924. Perhaps Gard's most famous works are his caricatures of Broadway celebrities for the walls of Sardi's restaurant, for which he was paid in meals. His drawings also appeared in The New York Herald Tribune's drama section. Gard died in New York City en route to the hospital in 1948. Mostly black and white original caricatures of theatrical productions, actors, actresses, and notables, but also includes a few motion picture celebrities and other subjects, by Alex Gard. The caricatures consist of both finished ink drawings, as well as a large number of preliminary sketches in pencil. Some drawings depict several personalities or productions in one. A few of the dozens of celebrities portrayed include Eddie Cantor, Katharine Hepburn, Bert Lahr, Ethel Merman, and Victor Moore. There are also several sketchbooks and cartoons, a number of which depict casinos, bars, and various scenes in the state of Nevada. Of note are 3 caricatures of New York theater critics, portayed as Eskimos, a marching band, and in judicial robes and wigs. less

The Robert Benney research materials include photographs, clippings, posters, playbills, and ephemera relating to his career as a portraitist of stage and screen personalities. The bulk of the material spans 1926 to 1947, and consists of photographs, and clippings of Benney's work depicting New York stage performers in their roles. Many photographs and clippings depict entire stage scenes, and, in addition to stage actors, there are photographs and clippings of musicians, dancers, comics, and radio personalities, and a small number of items relating to films of the period. less

Morrie Ryskind, poet, playwright, and columnist. Awarded the 1932 Pultizer Prize for drama for Of Thee I Sing co-written with George Kaufman, Ira Gershwin, and George Gershwin. Testified before the House Un-American Activities Hearings. The papers consist of correspondence, diaries and journals, and scripts by Ryskind. The bulk of the collection is scrapbooks, which have been microfilmed. These contain newspaper clippings pertaining to various productions, as well as Ryskind's published poetry and columns. less

Donehue was a director working primarily for the New York stage and television in the 1950s and 1960s. He also directed two films in Hollywood. The collection includes personal correspondence; production files containing notes, letters, partial scripts, cast lists, contracts and financial papers; complete scripts, many for television shows; clippings of reviews; and a few manuscripts and photographs. less
