Eleonora von Mendelssohn was a German stage actress who emigrated to America at the time of Hitler's rise to power. She was actively involved in aiding other emigres and had much contact with the German acting community in Hollywood and New York. The collection includes personal and business papers and memorabilia of Eleonora von Mendelssohn and family members dating from 1880-1949. Papers reveal aspects of Mendelssohn's life, as well as problems, concerns and political tenor of the German emigre community in the United States during this period. less

The Toscanini Legacy collection of sound recordings forms a part of the Toscanini Legacy housed at The New York Public Library. The recordings collection consists of acetate discs, shellac discs, vinyl discs, reel tapes, Selenophone recordings, kinescope films, and metal parts for 78 rpm recordings. It includes a set of 1926 La Scala rehearsals for concerts on October 7-9, 1926, then skips to the 1939/40 season, beginning with the rehearsals on April 10-12, 1940. The collection contains comprehensive holdings of rehearsals from the 1946/47 season to the 1953/54 season, as well as performance recordings from the 1932/33 season through the 1953/54 season, and recording sessions from 1920 to 1954. less

The collection includes some memorabilia of Artur Bodanzky: 2 batons, portrait drawings by Emil Orlik and Albert Sterner, a tiny photograph of Bodanzky swimming with the child Linda Muschenheim, 2 commemorative items including a poem by Brenda Putnam illustrated with photographs of sculptures of Bodanzky conducting, and 1 drawing inscribed to the Bodanzkys by Hendrik Willem Van Loon. The bulk of the collection consists of portrait photographs of musicians inscribed to one or both of the Muschenheims. Some of these are also postcards with handwritten messages. Musicians represented include: Adolf Busch, Kirsten Flagstad, Sigrid Onégin, Arturo Toscanini, and others. Other correspondence consists of 4 postcards with views, 1 letter and 1 telegram. Fiorello H. La Guardia (1882-1947) began his political career as deputy attorney of the state of New York in 1915. He was a representative in the U.S. Congress from 1917 to 1932 except for service in World War I and a term as president of New York's Board of Aldermen from 1919 to 1921. La Guardia ran for mayor of New York City in 1933 and served in that office for twelve years. He became director of the United Nations Relief and Rehabilitation program in 1945 after leaving the mayor's office. Papers document La Guardia's career as a congressman, president of the Board of Aldermen and three-term mayor of New York. The two largest portions of the collection are the congressional and mayoral correspondence files. Congressional correspondence, ca. 1918-1933, includes letters received and carbons of responses written either by La Guardia or by his secretary on his behalf, clippings, greeting cards, printed House bills, invitations, photographs, memoranda, notes, press releases, printed matter, and telegrams. Letters from constituents concern topics such as employment and naturalization and letters from citizens around the country relate to La Guardia's stand on issues before Congress, including social issues and prohibition. Mayoral correspondence files, 1933-1945, consist largely of correspondence with members of the public who wrote requesting help with education, employment, immigration, prison terms, and other problems; suggesting appointments for various city offices; and offering ideas, opinions and appreciation. Very little appears to document the daily operations of city business. Also included is a small group of press releases; typescript and printed speeches, articles, and other writings; printed matter; flight logbook, 1917-1919, kept by La Guardia on the Italian front; scrapbooks of clippings; and miscellaneous papers on a variety of topics (of note among these are photographs, printed matter and correspondence. less

Paul B. Affelder (1915-1975) was a music critic and the founder of Program Note Service. The collection consists primarily of Affelder’s writings, as well as press releases, programs and other promotional materials compiled by Affelder from the mid-1950s through 1975. Ribla, who entered the field of international opera in an unlikely manner, ultimately enjoyed a varied and distinguished career as a soprano. Arturo Toscanini was born in Parma, Italy, on March 25, 1867, and died in Riverdale, New York, on January 16, 1957. Many regard him as one of the world's greatest conductors. In addition, Toscanini's anti-Fascist stance during World War II distinguished him as a symbol of freedom and humanity. His extraordinarily long career began in 1886, when Italian orchestral conductors were still relatively few in number, and extended into the 1950s, by which time his radio and television broadcasts had transformed him into a cultural icon. The Toscanini Legacy papers form a portion of the Toscanini Legacy housed at the New York Public Library for the Performing Arts. The other major portion, of sound recordings, is housed in NYPL's Rodgers and Hammerstein Archives of Recorded Sound. The papers in the Music Division consist of music scores and orchestral parts with and without markings by Arturo Toscanini and others (including composers in some instances), correspondence, photographs, programs, clippings, books, newspapers, brochures, periodicals, scrapbooks, and medical and financial records. Subjects include the various musical organizations in Europe and the United States with which Toscanini was associated, and his anti-Fascist activities. The hundreds of correspondents include family members, composers, performers, conductors, and music critics; as well as Italian exiles, and U.S. and Italian political figures. less

The Voice of America recorded radio programs from commercial radio stations in the United States and rebroadcast them in Europe. The collection contains a wide variety of musical programs prepared for rebroadcast over Voice of America stations. Included in the Archives' holdings are: various Bing Crosby shows (including Kraft Music Hall, Chesterfield, and Philco Radio time), Ford Evening Hour, and Harvest of Stars radio programs. Also included are performances of various symphony orchestras including: the Boston Symphony, New York Philharmonic, NBC Symphony, and Philadelphia Orchestra, as well as recordings of the American Music Festival and the Festival of the American Music. less
