Charles Patrick Daly (1816-1899) was an American jurist, lecturer and writer who served as a judge of the New York City Court of Common Pleas for over forty years, the last twenty-seven as chief justice. Maria Lydig Daly, his wife, was active in the Democratic Party and various welfare organizations of the Civil War period. Her diaries of this period were published in 1962 under the title: Diary of a Union Lady, 1861-1865. The Wilhelmina F. Adams Papers (Additions) consist principally of her files chronicling her work as a civic leader primarily with New York Democratic club activities, the National Association of Negro Business and Professional Women's Clubs (NANBPWC) and the National Council of Negro Women. These files contain correspondence, newsletters, programs, brochures, minutes of meetings, official memoranda, reports, invitations, and news clippings. Files of the NANBPWC also include membership records, directories of officers, handouts, annual conference programs, and the constitution. Scrapbooks of the NANBPWC document annual events such as contests, parties and conferences from 1968-1972, and contain programs, invitations, certificates, handmade illustrations, newsletters, correspondence, and news clippings. less

Azariah Cutting Flagg (1790-1873) was a newspaper editor and politician in New York. The collection consists of letters received, 1821-1848, from Silas Wright, Jr., Michael Hoffman, John A. Dix, R.H. Walworth, W.L. Marcy, Albert Gallatin, Preston King, and others concerning national and local political and economic issues as well as some letters from Flagg to his associates, his notes on periodical articles, and a small amount of printed material. less

Charles Evans Hughes (1862-1948) was an American jurist and politician. He practiced law and held various political positions between 1884 and 1906. Twice elected governor of New York State, he resigned in 1910 to become an Associate Justice of the Supreme Court where he served until 1916. He returned to political life and was Secretary of State from 1921 to 1925. From 1926 to 1930 he held positions of judge for The Hague Tribunal Permanent Court of Arbitration and member of the Permanent Court of International Justice. He returned to the Supreme Court as Chief Justice in 1930 and served until his retirement in 1941. Collection consists of speeches made by Hughes, articles, memoranda, subject files, printed matter, and photographs. Speeches were made during his political campaigns and terms as governor of New York and cover topics such as women's suffrage, gambling, political corruption, and civil service reform between 1907 and 1910. Subject files include materials on the activities of the Water Supply Commission, the debate about direct nominations, local self-government and lotteries in New York, and the organization of the Democratic Party. less

Born and raised in Brooklyn, by middle-class parents from Barbados, Thomas Russell Jones graduated from St. Johns University Law School in 1937. A first lieutenant during World War II, he led companies of Black troops during the Allied invasion of Normandy, and participated in the liberation of the Alsace province of France. His professional activities included a law practice as a young Black lawyer during the 1950s; his leadership role in the founding of the Unity Democratic Club in Brooklyn in 1960, and of the Bedford Stuyvesant Restoration Corporation, together with Senator Robert Kennedy, in 1966; and a prestigious public service career, first in the New York State Assembly for the 17th District in 1962, as a delegate to New York State's Constitutional Convention in 1966, and then, in 1968. as a Justice of the New York State Supreme Court. He retired from the bench in 1978, and redirected his energy into advocacy for children, public speaking, and community activism in general.
