Samuel Rogers, English poet. The Samuel Rogers manuscript material in the Pforzheimer Collection consists of writings and correspondence. The writings include: holograph fair copy poetical extracts (from "Jacqueline," "Human Life" and "The Voyage of Columbus"); a holograph testimonial, "Sacred to the Memory of xxxxxx"; and a holograph fair copy of his poem on Earl Grey, "Written in July, 1834." The bulk of the correspondence is dated between 1820 and 1850. William Byron, 5th Baron Byron, Lieutenant in the Royal Navy. In 1765 he killed his cousin and neighbor, William Chaworth, in a duel. He was tried for murder, but found guilty only of manslaughter and forced to pay a small fine. He enjoyed the fact that the incident (and others similarly perceived as displays of cruelty) earned him the nickname "the Wicked Lord." He was the great-uncle to Lord Byron, the poet.
