Karla Jay is a lesbian feminist activist, author, and former professor of English at Pace University (New York). The collection contains correspondence, typescripts, and other items chiefly documenting Jay's work as a professor of English and as author and coeditor of books on the experiences of lesbians and gay men. The bulk of the collection pertains to her work as a writer and academic and includes some documentation of her activities as a pioneer feminist and lesbian activist with the consciousness raising group Redstockings and the Gay Liberation Front. The correspondence includes letters from many prominent writers and gay and lesbian rights activists, her literary agent, publishers, contributors to her anthologies, and alternative presses, as well as with academic and professional organizations. The collection also includes typescript drafts of the text of The Gay Report (which she co-authored with Allen Young) and the questionnaires returned by lesbian respondents; drafts of Jay's dissertation and other writings; slides; and audio recordings, chiefly of interviews with Jay or conducted by her from the 1970s to the 1990s. José Limón (1908-1972) was a Mexican-born modern dancer and choreographer best known for the development of the Limón technique; dances such as La Malinche (1947), The Moor's Pavane (1949), and The Traitor (1954); and for co-founding the Limón Dance Company. Kaja Gam (born 1952) is a Danish-born performance artist, modern dancer, choreographer, and designer. She is the founder of the Awkward Dance Company, and co-founder of The School of Hard Knocks. Regina Kellerman (1923-2009) was an architectural historian who served as an early director of research for the New York Landmarks Preservation Commission, and later become the founder and first director of the Greenwich Village Society for Historic Preservation. Her pioneering research, both in New York and the Netherlands, led to her correctly identifying the location of New York City's first City Hall, a conclusion borne out by the subsequent excavation of the site during the early 1970s. The collection covers Kellerman's career as an architectural historian and preservationist and includes correspondence, reports and notes, architectural drawings and plans, and photographs and slides which she generated and gathered in the course of her investigation of buildings, sites and neighborhoods located in New York City and the surrounding area. less

Nicholas N. Martinovich (1883-1954) was a Russian-born authority on Ottoman and Turkish art. He served in the Russian diplomatic service in the Near East and taught Oriental languages at the University of Petrograd. In 1922 he emigrated to the U.S. where he prepared descriptions of manuscripts and art objects for various museums. He wrote books and articles, lectured and taught courses at Columbia University in New York City. Collection consists of biographical sketch; corrrespondence, 1935-1951; and manuscripts of Martinovich's monographs "Battal and Danishmend" (a Turkish legendary work) and on Mihri Khatun, a Turkish poetess of the 15th century. Also, a transcription of an unidentified Persian manuscript and a collection of slides and photocopies of Oriental manuscripts. less

Citizens for a Quieter City was a non-profit, volunteer organization dedicated to the reduction of urban noise. Founded by Robert Alex Baron, its objectives were to develop information about the injurious effect of noise; research methods of controlling and reducing it; and educate the public on the importance of its abatement. The Citizens for a Quieter City records (1950-1980) document the work of the organization through correspondence with government and private sector officials; sound and video recordings; meeting minutes; records of noise complaints; scrapbooks; financial records; posters; and published research and information on noise pollution. Richard Saunders (1922-1987) was a Black photojournalist, who primarily covered Black communities in the United States, and later Africa and the Middle East. Most of the collection is from Saunders' time as a lead photographer for the United States Information Agency where he photographed and interviewed for Topic, a magazine distributed in Africa. The collection contains material related to his photographic assignments, including negatives, contact sheets, prints, captions, and notes. less

Benjamin F. McLaurin (1906-1989) was a Black labor leader and civic worker who held leadership positions within the Brotherhood of the Sleeping Car Porters (BSCP) during the 1920s and 1930s. He worked with A. Philip Randolph throughout the Civil Rights Movement, and later advocated for job equality and increased educational opportunities for minority communities while serving on New York City board committees. The collection, dated from the 1930s to 1983, showcases McLaurin's lifelong labor, civic, and political work through prints, slides, and negatives. less
