The collection documents the gay liberation movement in New York City and America from the 1950s to the 1980s. Included are records of the Gay Activists Alliance, the Gay Alliance of Brooklyn, Gay Switchboard of New York, the Mattachine Society Inc. of New York, and records of miscellaneous organizations including Christopher Street That New Magazine, Inc., and the periodicals Gaysweek, and New York Native. Personal papers include papers of Lockett Ford Ballard, Jr., Arthur Bell, Billy Wilder Blackwell, Perry Brass, Robert Clement, Don Jackson, Walter Porczak, and Sam Staggs. There are also miscellaneous records of IGIC, including correspondence, minutes, memoranda, photographs of gay rights demonstrations, scripts of plays by gay writers, and printed ephemera issued by gay, lesbian and AIDS organizations in the United States.

The Fergusons were an English family that settled in New York City beginning around 1802. The patriarch, Samuel Ferguson, was a prosperous merchant who established familial and commercial relationships with other wealthy and socially prominent New York families, including the Walton, Morewood, Day, Ogden, Lyde, and Fisher families. The Ferguson family papers, 1727-1943, consist of 18th and 19th century correspondence, business records, financial and legal documents, diaries, and family miscellany of the Ferguson and allied families. Genealogical notes, charts, and clippings dating from the early- to mid-20th century reflect the research of Samuel Ferguson's great-granddaughter, Helen Ferguson on the family's history.

Mark Lowe Fisher was a member of ACT UP (AIDS Coalition to Unleash Power), an activist organization formed in 1987 in New York City. ACT UP utilizes mass demonstrations and acts of civil disobedience to focus public and governmental attention on crucial AIDS issues. Fisher died of AIDS-related causes in 1992. The collection consists primarily of material relating to ACT UP demonstrations attended by Fisher in Albany, New York City, Atlanta and Maine. "Target Bush" (1991) is the most thoroughly documented ACT UP demonstration in this collection. The collection also contains other documents by and about ACT UP, as well as broadsides and ephemera by ACT UP and other organizations. Fisher was arrested several times at demonstrations, and his arrest records are included in the collection. The remainder of the material consists of subject files and personal miscellany, such as Fisher's calendars, 1983-1991.

Mary de Camp Banks Moore (b.1878) was the daughter of Gen. Robert Lenox Banks, Secretary and Assistant Treasurer of the New York Central Railroad, and Mary de Camp Corning, widow of Edwin Weld Corning, who was the nephew of Erastus Corning, President of the New York Central Railroad. She was born and raised in Albany, N.Y. In 1901 she married Maurice Moore; they resided in Lynchburg, Va. The Mary de Camp Banks Moore papers consist of her personal papers and her genealogical research on the De Camp, Carmer, Lenox, Banks, and allied families. Personal papers, 1896-1949 and undated, consist of her writings, including a notebook of personal reminiscences written 1913 recording her early life in Albany prior to her marriage in 1901, and notes on the early life of her mother, Mary de Camp Banks (b. 1843); personal correspondence, with some Banks family notes; and ephemera, including certificates and invitations. Also present are photographs, including cabinet cards, cartes-de-visite, and tintypes, of Mary de Camp Banks Moore, family members and friends,and residences. Joseph A. Sonnabend is a physician, laboratory scientist, clinical researcher, and community activist who contributed immeasurably to the fight against AIDS. As a pioneer in community-based research, he co-founded the AIDS Medical Foundation (later to become the American Foundation for AIDS Research, or amfAR) and the Community Research Initiative/Community Research Initiative on AIDS, as well as the PWA Health Group. In addition to creating community organizations, Dr. Sonnabend treated patients and conducted research into AIDS for the first twenty-three years of the epidemic in New York City, and helped create the first safe-sex guidelines. The Joseph A. Sonnabend Papers contain interviews, lectures, and press clippings; correspondence; published and near-print materials; legal case files and depositions; organizational records, clinical trial records, and grant applications and research proposals; scientific research, article drafts, charts, graphs, and notes; conference materials; and ephemera. The materials in this collection date from 1963 through 2004.

The collection, dating from 1908 to 2011, consists of the papers of Dr. Robert L. Leslie and the records he generated as a member and officer of the Typophiles. Included are Dr. Leslie's personal and professional papers, as well as records from his businesses, The Composing Room, the Gallery 303, and the Heritage of the Graphic Arts lecture series. The records reflect the book arts during what may be considered the golden age of fine printing. Significant individuals represented in the collection include Frederick W. John Edward Heys is an actor, writer, and director who performed with numerous performance groups including the Angels of Light and Charles Ludlam's Ridiculous Theatrical Company. He knew and worked with numerous artists including Charles Ludlam, Ethyl Eichelberger, Jackie Curtis, Cookie Mueller, Bill Vehr, Tomata du Plenty, and Gary Indiana. Heys also created several one man shows including his portrayal of Diana Vreeland and La Mamounia; directed Alba Clemente in Rene Ricard's translation of Jean Cocteau's A Human Voice; and created a documentary about Charlotte von Mahlsdorf. The John Edward Heys papers, Additions cover Heys' personal and professional life from 1938 to 2011. Most of these materials pertain to his later life and work in Berlin, Germany.
