Abraham Hayward, English essayist and translator. His many friendships with significant figures in the literary and political circles of Victorian London resulted in this collection of correspondence. The Abraham Hayward Correspondence Files are chiefly made up of letters addressed to Abraham Hayward by various English writers, politicians and society figures between 1831 and 1884. Among the correspondents represented are: Lord Brougham, lord chancellor; John Wilson Croker, politician and writer; Isaac D'Israeli, writer; W. E. Gladstone, prime minister and author; Letitia Elizabeth Landon, poet; Edward Bulwer-Lytton, writer and politician; Lady Sydney (Owenson) Morgan, novelist and hostess; Count D'Orsay, man of fashion; Samuel Rogers, poet; and William Makepeace Thackeray, novelist. A few items in the Files are letters addressed to recipients other than Hayward, some apparently collected by him as autographs. less

The Leigh Hunt manuscript material in the Pforzheimer Collection consists of writings and correspondence. The writings include: a holograph draft of his poem, "Jenny Kiss'd Me"; a holograph fragment of his preface to Shelley's Mask of Anarchy; and his address book circa the mid-1850s. The bulk of the correspondence is dated between 1817 and 1826 and discusses his experiences in Italy, including the death of Shelley; family matters; and publishing business. Correspondents include: the Irish poet William Allingham; the philosopher and reformer Jeremy Bentham; the writer and painter William Hazlitt; the writers Percy Bysshe and Mary Shelley; and over seventy others. less

Red half morocco album with gilt spine titling ("MSS. / BOWRING / CORRESPONDENCE / 1822-1854"), containing 59 manuscript letters addressed to John Bowring, the English politician, diplomat and writer. Includes letters to Bowring in his capacities as political editor of Jeremy Bentham's radical Westminster Review; as comissioner to investigate Britain's international commercial relations; as consul at Canton; and as governor of Hong Kong. Correspondents include: Maria Edgeworth, novelist and educationist; Richard Cobden, manufacturer and politician; Lord Palmerston, Prime Minister; Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley, novelist; and over fifty others. Also included are two letters and a list of books in Bowring's hand; an 1808 letter from the Duke of Wellington to Lt.
