The New York Public Library purchased Arthur A. Schomburg's collection of books, pamphlets, prints and photographs in 1926 with funds from the Carnegie Corporation and housed at the 135th Street Branch Library of The New York Public Library. L. Hollingsworth Wood was appointed in 1925 by the Board of Trustees of The New York Public Library to purchase and provide guidelines for the Schomburg Collection of Negro Literature. Members of the Advisory Committee of the Arthur A. Schomburg Collection, in addition to Wood, included Arthur A. Schomburg, Henry G. Leach, New York Public Library, Mrs. Charles S. Brown, Jr., Library trustee; and Eugene Kinckle Jones, Secretary of the National Urban League. Charles S. Johnson, editor of Opportunity magazine, managed the negotiations between the officials of the National Urban League and Mr. Schomburg. The 135th Street Branch Library, under the guidance of Ernestine Rose, the Head Librarian, already had a nucleus of a reference library, the Division of Negro Literature, History and Prints that had officially opened on May 8, 1925. The Schomburg Collection became a major part of this reference library. Schomburg Committee of the Trustees of New York Public Library Files consists of correspondence and minutes of meetings of the Schomburg Committee of the Trustees of The New York Public Library. There are also some news clippings relating to the purchase of the Arthur A. Schomburg Collection of Negro Literature comprised of books, pamphlets, prints, manuscripts and other material. The post 1926 papers include correspondence pertaining to efforts to keep Arthur Schomburg on the library payroll, acquisition of additional material, and Arthur Schomburg's research plans. The correspondence is largely between L. Hollingsworth Wood, president of the National Urban League and member of the Advisory Committee of the Arthur A. Schomburg Collection, and Franklin Hopper, Chief of Circulation of the NYPL; Charles S. Johnson, Secretary of the Advisory Committee; Dr. F. P. Keppel of the Carnegie Corporation; Henry G. Leach, Chairman of the Advisory Committee; Ernestine Rose, Librarian of the 135th Street Branch Library; and Arthur A. Schomburg. less

Records consist of general and family correspondence, personal papers, subject papers, writings and speeches, diaries and travel journals, financial records, papers of Bowker's father, Daniel Rogers Bowker, scrapbooks, photographs, printed matter, and memorabilia. General correspondence reflects R.R. Bowker's business affairs as well as his interest in tariff reform, free trade, copyright law, library science, civil service, and political reform. Other materials include family correspondence, 1857-1932; personal papers containing items such as childhood letters, school reports, family records, and letters of condolence; and subject papers relating to copyright, the Edison Electric Illuminating Co., free trade and tariff reform, and his biography. Also, letterbooks for the period from 1875 to 1913; Bowker's writings and speeches; diaries, 1859-1932; and travel journals from the 1860s to 1926 for trips in the United States, the West Indies, Europe, the Near East, and around the world in 1898. Financial records include accounts for personal and some business expenses, bank books, cancelled checks, and personal ledgers, 1893-1910. less

Don Carlos Seitz (1862-1935), American journalist and author, worked for several magazines and newspapers, including the New York World where he was business manager from 1898 to 1923. In addition to his editorial career, he wrote biographies and articles for magazines. Collection consists of correspondence and typescripts by Seitz. Correspondence, 1882-1934, mostly incoming, is with political leaders, authors, publishers, editors, and literary people. Topics covered are the New York World, Joseph Pulitzer and Seitz's books. Alfred Anthony Williams (1860- ), theologian, author and educator, was an executive and administrator of the Committee of the Federal Council of Christ, founder of the Federation Committee of Good Will Between Jews and Christians, and treasurer of the General Conference of Free Baptists. Collection consists mainly of 18th-20th century autographs, with the bulk from the mid-19th to 20th centuries, representing both primary and secondary figures from diverse fields including literature, music, education, politics, and royalty. Names include Susan B. Anthony, John Bigelow, Edwin Booth, Frederick Douglass, Nathaniel Hawthorne, Herman Melville, H.L. Mencken, Franklin Roosevelt, Theodore Roosevelt, Augustus Saint-Gaudens, Margaret Sanger, Philip Schuyler, and Daniel Webster. Figures represented are mainly Americans. Many letters are to Anthony. Following the name file is a subject file consisting of miscellaneous autograph letters arranged by profession or institution. Also, two boxes of unsorted material, including photographs usually relating to individuals whose autographs are contained in the collection; an autograph fan; and a glass plate negative. less
