Mary Britton Miller (1883-1975) was a novelist and poet who wrote under the name of Isabel Bolton. She lived in New York City for most of her adult life and at one time was a volunteer social worker in Greenwich Village. Collection contains correspondence, legal papers, writings of Miller and others, and photograph. Correspondence consists of incoming letters from writers and artists; legal papers concern contracts and royalty statements; writings include poetry, short story and novel typescripts, galley proofs and reviews, and poems of other poets; and photograph of sculpture. less

Edgar Lee Masters (1868-1950), poet, novelist, and biographer, was born in Kansas and raised in Illinois. He was admitted to the bar in 1891 and practiced law for many years in Chicago, including a stint with Clarence Darrow, 1903-1911. However, his true vocation was writing; over a period of nearly thirty years he produced more than forty books of poetry and prose, including biographies of Abraham Lincoln, Vachel Lindsey, Walt Whitman, and Mark Twain. His most famous work was Spoon River Anthology (1915), first published the previous year as a series of 244 epitaphs in free verse in Reedy's Mirror of St. Louis under the pseudonym Webster Ford. He was married twice, to Helen Jenkins in 1898 and to Ellen Frances Coyne in 1923, and had four children. However, from 1931 to 1944 he lived alone in the Chelsea Hotel in New York City where he became acquainted with Alice Davis (later Tibbetts). Masters died in 1950 in Melrose, Pennsylvania. Collection consists of correspondence, poetry, an extensive journal of Alice Davis's, snapshots, and miscellaneous printed material documenting the relationship between Alice E. Davis (later Tibbetts) and Edgar Lee Masters while they both lived in the Chelsea Hotel. Bulk of the collection consists of letters from Masters to Davis as well as considerable typescript and holograph poetry written by Masters and often dedicated to Davis, 1936-1944. There is also correspondence between Davis and members of Masters's family as well as between Davis and August Derleth, Dorothy Dow, Theodore Dreiser, H.L. Mencken, Dudley Nichols, Norman Vincent Peale, and Louis Quarles. In addition, the collection includes Davis's extensive typescript journal covering the early years of her friendship with Masters, 1935-1938. There are also programs, playbills, and clippings pertaining to Masters, particularly to the Broadway production of Spoon River Anthology in 1963 and printed material relating to the Chelsea Hotel. less

Richard Henry Stoddard (1825-1903) was an American poet, author, editor, and literary critic. He worked as a customs inspector and in the Dept. of Docks in New York City; then as literary reviewer for the New York World from 1871 to 1876; city librarian, 1877; and from 1880 until his death, he was literary editor of the Mail and Express. His wife, Elizabeth Drew Barstow Stoddard (1823-1902), was a poet and author. Collection consists of correspondence, manuscripts, notes, and other papers. Correspondence is with friends of the Stoddards and literary figures in America and Great Britain. Manuscripts are of poems by Richard H. Stoddard and others. The Robert Underwood Johnson papers document Johnson's personal and professional life from 1875 until his death in 1937. Johnson, born in 1853, served on the staff of The Century Magazine until 1913, eventually rising to the position of editor in chief. He also served as the American Ambassador to Italy from 1920-1921, and was active in the causes of nature conservation and copyright law. The papers contain personal correspondence and writings, and also document the activities of the American Copyright League, of which Johnson was secretary, between the years 1880-1929. less

Anne Marx was a poet, lecturer and editor. She was vice-president of the Poetry Society of America in 1978 and regional president of the National League of American Pen Women in 1992. She died April 16, 2006. The collection contains correspondence with friends and organizations, Poetry Society of America records, material about lectures and workshops, drafts of her poems and material pertaining to the nine volumes of published poetry. Also included are audio tapes. Additions donated in 1994 contain material concerning her early years living in Germany, including correspondence, diaries, school material and poems. James Turcotte (1945-1993) was an American art gallery owner and tax advisor who began writing in the late 1960s. At first he wrote fiction and free verse reflecting his experiences as a gay man, father, drug user, and resident of Los Angeles and New York. After being diagnosed with AIDS in 1988, his writings were primarily poetic and journalistic observations of his life. Collection consists of Turcotte's writings, sketches, photographs, and videocassette produced by Turcotte. Turcotte's writings, 1969-1992, include poetry, fiction and journals, some illustrated with sketches. Also, sketchbooks, 1975-1986, by Turcotte; photographs; and videocassette he produced at Gay Men's Health Crisis in 1991 containing poetry readings and commentary by writers with AIDS. less

Aaron Cohen (1936?-1989) was an American dancer, actor, stage manager, and teacher of stage movement and creative writing. He died of AIDS-related causes in 1989. Collection consists of typescripts and computer print-outs of Cohen's poems, many with autograph annotations or inscriptions to his friend Linda Rogers. Langdon Elwyn Mitchell (1862-1935), American poet and playwright, used the pseudonym John Philip Varley. His best-known plays were Becky Sharp (1899) and The New York Idea (1906). He taught playwriting at the University of Pennsylvania from 1928 to 1930. His father was S. Weir Mitchell, neurologist and author. Joel Barlow (1754-1812) was an American poet, businessman, and diplomat. The collection consists of miscellaneous autograph material, transcripts and printed matter reflecting Joel Barlow's personal, business and literary affairs, and his diplomatic post as U.S. Minister to France, 1812. Present are three letters by Barlow to various recipients regarding personal and literary matters, 1788-1807; a letter to Mr. Fitzgerald, a merchant in Alexandria, Va.,regarding the Scioto Land Company, 1790; Barlow's autograph translation of an agreement employing Etienne Sulpice Hallet with the Scioto Land Company, 1790; and two documents signed as U.S. Minister Plenipotentiary to France dated 28 Feb. 1812 and 13 Aug. 1812. Also, a printed decree giving Barlow the title and rights of French citizenship, 23 Feb. 1793; two engraved portraits, one with a clipped autograph receipt dated 1779; a signed check, 1811; and a binding cover with signed fly leaf. Transcripts include Barlow's correspondence regarding the purchase of wine for the Scioto Company, 1789-1790; a Bible inscription for his sister Huldah, 1805; a letter to his brother Jacob, 1809; and a photostat copy of a letter to H.P. The Kenneth Koch papers document the personal and professional activities of the writer, Kenneth Koch. Holograph and typescript drafts comprise the bulk of the collection. The papers contain holograph manuscripts and typescripts of the author's published and unpublished work (in every genre, including plays, "comics," and games), notes and other material related to the works, Koch's correspondence, photographs, collaborations, material related to his work with children, miscellaneous personal documents, printed material, ephemera, scrapbooks, press cuttings and photocopied reviews of his books, and holograph manuscripts and typescripts of works by other writers (especially Frank O'Hara and John Ashbery). Also included in the papers are 9 boxes of unsorted printed ephemera, and 3 boxes of journals, magazines, and newspapers. The correspondence in the collection is mostly made up of incoming material, of which there are three categories: personal, professional, and fan mail. The personal and professional correspondence is arranged alphabetically by author; within each author's folder letters are arranged by date. Of the personal correspondence and works by others, the most substantial holdings are by "New York School" artists such as Frank O'Hara, John Ashbery, James Schuyler, Larry Rivers, Harry Mathews, Fairfield Porter, and Jane Freilicher. Also noteworthy are letters and works by Koch's former students, Ron Padgett, Frank Lima, Tony Towle, David Shapiro, and Jordan Davis. He worked in the New York City school system as a teacher, principal and associate superintendent of schools. His published works included books of poetry and articles and stories on the life of immigrants in American society. He also was editor of Puck, 1916, and literary editor of The American Hebrew, 1916-1932.
