Henry J. Raymond was a New York politician and the first editor of the New York Times. He founded the New-York Daily Times in 1851 with George Jones and Edward B. Wesley. Gordon Lester Ford (1823-1891) was a businessman, lawyer and collector of Americana. He practiced law for much of his life but his main interests were business and real estate investment. He was president of the New London, Willimantic & Palmer Railroad from 1852 to 1856 and director or investor in several other railroads. He also served as U.S. Marshall in southern New York, collector of internal revenue for the third collection district, commissioner of deeds, and business manager of the New York Tribune. In 1863 he helped to found the Brooklyn Daily Union, a newspaper devoted to supporting the Union cause during the Civil War. He also was a founder of the Brooklyn Academy of Music and of the Brooklyn Art Association. He collected books and manuscripts and assembled what was regarded as one of the largest private collections of Americana. The bulk of the collection consists of correspondence, legal and business papers and account books. General correspondence, 1842-1893, which includes in-coming letters and drafts and letterbooks of out-going letters, reflects Ford's activities as a lawyer and businessman, his real estate and railroad investments, his government service, and his autograph collecting. Family correspondence, 1830-1910, contains Ford's correspondence with his parents, wife (Emily Ellsworth Ford), brothers and sisters, children, and various members of his mother's family, the Burnhams. Legal papers, 1837-1893, include case records, letterbook, law diaries, and law ledgers. Business papers, 1839-1891, include insurance papers, accounts, bills and receipts, promissory notes, and indentures. Account books, 1844-1892, consist of ledgers reflecting Ford's legal and business transactions and accounts with various people including family members. There are also papers, 1863-1871, concerning his internal revenue position and the Brooklyn Daily Union, in addition to miscellaneous papers which include membership certificates, invitations, calling cards, and printed ephemera. less

The Mail & Express Company was the publisher of the Evening Mail, a New York City daily newspaper. In 1924 the Evening Mail was absorbed by the New York Evening Telegram. Collection consists of non-editorial records for the Mail & Express Company for the period 1904-1920. Files of the Treasurer, 1915-1920, the Business Manager, 1915-1920, and the Auditor, 1916-1920, contain correspondence and memoranda pertaining to finances, advertising, circulation, and other business issues, including several payrolls, 1914-1917, for various departments. Legal files, 1904-1915, contain briefs, depositions and court transcripts for lawsuits against the Evening Mail. Also, two volumes about the newspaper's advertising, and architectural drawings of the company's offices. less

Dorothy Schiff (1903-1989) was the publisher of the New York Post, the oldest daily newspaper in the United States, from 1942 to 1976. She wrote a column for the paper and served as editor-in-chief from 1961 until she sold the paper in 1976. She also published the Paris Post in France from 1945 to 1948 and owned several radio stations in New York City, Los Angeles and San Francisco. The collection contains editorial, operational, business, and legal files of the New York Post and Schiff's personal files and family letters. Editorial files, ca. 1938-ca. 1980, consist chiefly of memoranda between Schiff and her editors, columnists and others; materials relating to the editorial operations of the paper; and files, 1944-1948, of the Paris Post. Operational files are mostly memoranda between Schiff and her plant department heads and correspondence concerning the non-editorial operations of the Post. Business files relate to the business side of the paper and radio stations. Legal files reflect the Post's involvement in libel and anti-trust suits. Schiff's personal papers include memoranda and correspondence dealing with her life as a philanthropist and volunteer worker for various causes, family and personal financial papers, and materials for Jeffrey Potter's biography of Schiff. Of particular interest are transcripts of Potter's taped interviews with Schiff and her friends and associates. Also, photographs of Schiff and others; awards and citations she earned; newsclippings of her column; scrapbooks, 1946-1989, of clippings about her; and printed matter. less

The collection contains correspondence, letterpress books, scrapbooks, financial records, blueprints, maps, land surveys, photographs, honorary degrees and awards presented to Ochs, and other material related to his life and career. The main areas of focus in the collection are the Chattanooga Times, the New York Times, the Philadelphia Public Ledger, the Philadelphia Times, Ochs' continuing interest in the city of Chattanooga, and personal and family matters. less
