Timothy Pickering (1745-1829) was a Massachusetts statesman who served variously as colonel in the Continental Army, United States Secretary of War, and United States Secretary of State. The Timothy Pickering papers consist mainly of letters written by Pickering in the 1780s and 1790s in a professional capacity, with Samuel Hodgdon and Jedidiah Huntington being his most frequent correspondents. Earlier papers document the conditions and movements of the Army, 1780-1781, and include bills for services and supplies signed by Pickering as Quartermaster General. Letters relative to his duties as Secretary of War discuss the acquisition of provisions and munitions. Letters and documents created during his tenure as Secretary of State include "an estimate of the expence of negociating a treaty with the French Republic," 1799, and "Principles which should govern in choosing a president of the United States." Later material relates to personal and family matters, including an 1827 letter to Virgil Maxcy asking for advice in the growing of hops. Also present are autographs, seals, and receipts. less

A small quantity of papers belonging to Thomas Poppleton, a surveyor from Baltimore, including a journal kept while Poppleton was employed as commissioner to prepare a plan for draining the Collect Pond and Lispenard Meadows near Canal Street. The journal also mentions meetings with Robert Fulton, Anthony Bleecker, and Eli Whitney. Israel Putnam was a General in the Continental Army noted for his strategic efforts and leadership at the Battle of Bunker Hill. The papers consist mainly of receipts and inventories, including bills for goods and sundries such as wine, household items, and expenses at Fraunces Tavern, and a memorandum of "goods to be sent down to the camps" in August, 1775. Also present is a letter sent from Crosswicks, New Jersey, on January 11, 1777, noting current conditions, activities of Tory troops, and General Washington's planned activities shortly after the battles of Trenton and Princeton. less

John M. Williamson (1787-1878) of Stony Brook, Long Island, was a prominent lawyer, politician and militia officer. He served notably as a New York State Assemblyman for Suffolk County, Supervisor of the Town of Brookhaven, and judge of the County's Court of Sessions. John M. Williamson letters and documents, 1813-1835, consist chiefly of letters addressed to him by friends, family members and militia personnel while at Sag Harbor garrison during the War of 1812, and at his residence in Stony Brook. There are also a few letters from others addressed to his father Jedidiah Williamson and to William S. Williamson, as well as receipts, military orders and other items relating to militia duties, some carried out by William S. Williamson. Correspondents include his father; his brother Seth Williamson at Scotchtown, New York; his cousin Elnathan Hawkins, a mariner; and John R. Satterly, a militia officer and friend. Solomon Woodward Jr. (1804-1886) of Taunton, Massachusetts was a dry-goods merchant, farmer, and politician, representing Taunton in the Massachusetts House of Representatives in 1860 and 1861. He was the son of Solomon Woodward (died 1877) and Mary Wilbore, and the grandson of Ambrose and Rachel Woodward. He married Betsey H. Perkins in 1828. The collection of Solomon Woodward Jr. letters and accounts comprises three letters written to or by him regarding business and local Methodist church affairs, 1845, 1850 and undated; loose financial documents such as invoices, waybills and receipts, 1833-1858; and six pocket account memorandum books, 1833-1847. Accounting records document purchases of textiles and millinery goods from wholesale suppliers in Boston; his grocery account with John W. Seabury; subscriptions to newspapers and abolitionist, Methodist and household publications; tuition payments for his children; and other transactions. less

Mining Company, the Dunderberg Mining Company, and the Cascade Mining Company. The J. Warren Brown papers, 1855-1906, consist of miscellaneous letters, documents and printed matter relating to his mining interests. Leonard de Neufville was the son of merchant banker Jean (John) de Neufville, head of the firm of Jean de Neufville & Son in Amsterdam. The firm assisted the Continental Congress with financial transactions during the American Revolution. Leonard emigrated to the United States in 1783 and was later joined by his father, who attempted to obtain restitution for wartime losses. Leonard established glass works at Dowesburgh (Guilderland) near Albany, New York, in 1785. The collection consists of business letters to Leonard de Neufville at Albany, Philadelphia, and Charleston from New York merchant Robert Gilchrist and others, 1786-1789, and two receipts. Letters from Gilchrist to Leonard de Neufville concern de Neufville's financial difficulties, particularly with respect to the glass works at Albany. Receipts are for payment from Leonard de Neufville via Gilchrist signed by Isaac H. Levy, 1789; and for payment from John de Neufville, discharging debts of John de Neufville & Son, signed by Paschal N. Smith, 1790. less

Dutilh & Wachsmuth, a mercantile firm in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, was established by Etienne (Stephen) Dutilh (1751-1810) under the name of E. Dutilh & Co., doing business shortly after his arrival in Philadelphia in 1783. The collection of Dutilh & Wachsmuth letters and accounts, 1783-1806, consists of letters and loose accounts received from European merchants, and an account book of an unidentified Baltimore shipping merchant handling consignments from Haiti for Dutilh & Wachsmuth. Justin Winsor (1831-1897) was an American librarian and historian. He was superintendent of the Boston Public Library from 1868 to 1877, and librarian of Harvard University from 1877 until his death. The collection contains letters to Justin Winsor, as Superintendent of the Boston Public Library, from other librarians and Albany publisher Joel Munsell, relative to the purchase and exchange of listed books and periodicals, 1869-1874, with two letters to his predecessor Charles Coffin Jewett on the same subject, 1866-1867. Winsor's letters to Gordon L. Ford, Worthington C. Ford, and Paul L.
