Marilyn J. La Vine (1931-2009) was a dance enthusiast who dedicated her life to researching and promoting the legacy of Russian dancer Rudolf Nureyev (1938-1993). The Marilyn La Vine collection of Rudolf Nureyev materials (1939-2008) holds research files and photographs relating to the life and career of Rudolf Nureyev. The research files contain a master copy of La Vine’s compilation of volumes of clippings relating to Nureyev, as well as correspondence, ephemera, and scrapbooks. The photographs date from 1939 until after Nureyev’s death in 1993, and give a comprehensive representation of his dancing career. less

Nancy Zeckendorf is an arts patron and former Metropolitan Opera ballet dancer. Zeckendorf was a close friend of British choreographer Antony Tudor and one of the trustees of his will. The Nancy Zeckendorf collection on Antony Tudor and Oliver Smith (dating from 1951 to 2015) is comprised of material preserved by Zeckendorf about Tudor; his partner, dancer Hugh Laing; and American scenic designer Oliver Smith. In addition to Tudor's handwritten letters to Zeckendorf, photographs, clippings, and programs, other files contain an official 1986 Kennedy Center Honors book (and event information), papers related to his memorial service, a copy of Laing's will, and a 1988 letter written by Laing to Zeckendorf. The Oliver Smith items consist of a memorial booklet, a copy of "Oliver Smith- An Appreciation" by Lloyd Burlingame, a description of the "Collected Artwork and Papers of Oliver Smith," and a chronology of his work. less

Anthony Horton was an African-American man who for a period of his life was homeless and lived in the tunnels beneath the subway trains. Together with author/artist Youme Landowne, Horton wrote and illustrated "Pitch Black: Don't be Skerd" (2008) which tells the story of how the two met, his background and his life underground. Horton worked with the Theater of Oppressed NYC, frequently playing the role of a police officer in the troupe's performances. He died in a fire that ripped through his underground home. The Anthony Horton Collection consists of a mock-up for the book he and Youme Landowne wrote and illustrated together, "Pitch Black: Don't be Skerd," about Horton's life in the tunnels under the New York City subway system, and letters he wrote to his co-author/friend from 2009-2010. The letters discuss their friendship and his thoughts; most were written while he was an inmate in Downstate Correctional facility in Fishkill, New York. According to Landowne, he was incarcerated because of possession of an antique knife that he wanted to sell. There are additional writings along with original artwork and illustrations. less

Barnard Hughes (1915-2006) and Helen Stenborg (1925-2011) were prolific stage and screen actors. Hughes was best known for his award-winning turn as the titular character in Da, and Stenborg performed extensively with the Circle Repertory Company. Their papers date from the 1880s to 2011, and chronicle their professional careers and personal collecting interests through posters, programs, photographs, correspondence, engravings, scripts, manuscripts, and award trophies. The collection also contains theater memorabilia that Hughes inherited from Thelma Chandler, a stage manager. The Chandler memorabilia includes correspondence from Margaret Webster, the American director, producer, and actress. less

Gus Solomons Jr. is an African-American dancer, choreographer, teacher, and writer. Solomons was a soloist in the dance companies of Donald McKayle, Pearl Lang, Martha Graham and, most notably, Merce Cunningham. Solomons formed his own troupe, The Solomons Company/Dance in 1972. Twenty-four years later in 1996, Solomons founded Paradigm to celebrate mature artists on stage. John Edward Heys is an actor/filmmaker/director/writer who performed with numerous performance groups including the Angels of Light and Charles Ludlam's Ridiculous Theatrical Company. He worked with numerous artists including Charles Ludlam, Ethyl Eichelberger, Jackie Curtis, Cookie Mueller, Bill Vehr, Tomata du Plenty, and Gary Indiana. Heys also created several one man shows including his portrayal of Diana Vreeland and La Mamounia; directed Alba Clemente in Rene Ricard's translation of Jean Cocteau's A Human Voice; and created a documentary about Charlotte von Mahlsdorf. The collection contains materials related to the people and personalities whom Heys knew and the performances that Heys was involved in or attended. A significant portion of the collection concerns performances Heys created. Materials also concern Charles Ludlam, the Ridiculous Theatrical Company, Jackie Curtis, and Cookie Mueller.
