The Rand School of Social Science, a socialist institution, was founded in New York City in 1906. Alexander Trachtenberg was director of the school's Dept. of Labor Research. Collection contains correspondence and writings of Trachtenberg while he was director of the Dept. of Labor Research at the Rand School. Correspondence consists primarily of letters received by Trachtenberg and documents the preparation and reception of the American Labor Yearbook, 1916, and an effort in 1918 to have the New York legislature abolish night work in bakeries. Included are letters from representatives of labor unions, socialist groups and journals, university professors, and government officials. Also, typescripts of articles, reports and other writings mainly on socialist and labor topics. less

Ralph Thompson (1904-1979) was an American author, teacher and editor. He was a book critic at the New York Times and a contributing editor at Time Magazine, wrote reference works and translations, and was editor of the Book-of-the-Month Club from 1951 until 1975. Collection contains correspondence, manuscripts, photographs, and printed matter relating to Thompson's work. Bulk of the correspondence consists of letters to Thompson mainly from authors and readers of his reviews while he was a book columnist at the New York Times. Also, original manuscripts by Thompson and others, pamphlets on literary works, and photographs of a mountain-climbing expedition to Mount Everest. less
