John R. Strachen was born in Harlem. He attended De Witt Clinton High School and received a degree from New York University. He spent four years in the armed forces, followed by two years in the New York City public school system. He became a postal clerk in 1941; he was promoted to a supervisory position in 1959, where he helped implement the zip code system in New York City. After a stint as the Acting Postmaster of New York in 1966 and confirmation by the U.S. Senate, he became the Postmaster of New York in 1967. The John R.
