Metronome, an American magazine published from 1885 to 1961, is most known for its run from the 1930s onward as a publication for jazz fans and listeners, and for its production of "Metronome All-Stars" recordings. The magazine's library of photographs, dating from 1917 to 1996, documents the American jazz and popular music industry from the 1930s through the 1950s. The collection features hundreds of musicians, band leaders, vocalists, entertainers, and media and music business figures, including Woody Herman, Benny Goodman, Duke Ellington, Stan Kenton, Gene Krupa, Count Basie, Harry James, and Louis Armstrong. less

The New York Jazz Museum was founded in 1972, and operated until 1977, with the goals of preserving jazz as an art form and to educate the public about jazz. The bulk of the New York Jazz Museum photograph collection is comprised of performance and promotional portraits of musicians. Richard Saunders (1922-1987) was a Black photojournalist who primarily covered Black communities in the United States and later Africa and the Middle East. Most of the collection is from Saunders' time as a lead photographer for the United States Information Agency, where he photographed and interviewed for Topic, a magazine distributed in Africa. The papers hold tearsheets from the magazine, captions, notes, and transcripts from interviews. less
