George Samuel Schuyler (1895-1977) was an African-American journalist and author. Josephine Cogdell Schuyler (ca. 1900-1969), the daughter of a wealthy white Texas family, was an artist and writer who managed Philippa Schuyler's musical career. Philippa Duke Schuyler (1931-1967) was a child musical prodigy, concert pianist, composer and journalist. The collection documents the lives of musician and journalist Philippa Schuyler, her father, journalist and writer George Schuyler, and mother Josephine Schuyler, who managed Philippa's musical career, from the 1930s to the late 1960s. The collection consists of studio and candid portraits of the Schuylers; Josephine's family, the Cogdells; friends, colleagues and acquaintances; celebrities; political officials; and military personnel. Also included are views of concerts; radio broadcasts; social events and gatherings; street scenes; foreign travel; and family pets. Depictions of George Schuyler's family are very limited, and there are no depictions of his early life. The Military collection documents primarily the military activities of African Americans in the United States armed forces, dating from the American Revolution to the mid-1980s. The collection, which depicts mostly the wartime activities of the United States military and is strongest for the period from World War II (1940s) to the mid-1950s, includes single and group portraits of enlisted personnel and officers; views of battles and troop movements; views of military encampments near battle sites or in foreign lands; and views of military bases and training camps, depicting daily military life and basic training, mainly from the 1940s to the mid-1950s. The U.S. Army, Navy, and Marine Corps are the most represented branches of the armed services. Images from the 1700s, the 1800s, the Korean War and Vietnamese Conflict, and the late-1950s to the 1890s are limited. The Sports collection depicts some aspects of African-American participation in sporting events and athletic competition, mainly from the 1940s to the mid-1980s. Sports represented in the collection consist of: baseball, basketball, body building, bowling, boxing, car racing, fencing, football, golf, gymnastics, hockey, horse racing, martial arts, miscellaneous sports, the Olympic Games, roller skating, soccer, swimming, tennis, and track and field. The collection consists of individual and group portraits and candid shots of professional, amateur and youth group athletes, mostly male, as well as some coaches, owners and sports fans; views and candid shots of sporting events and competitions; some views of sports classes and athletic training sessions; views of sports award ceremonies and charity events; and some publicty shots. The sports most heavily depicted in the collection are baseball, basketball, boxing, football and track and field. The collection is limited in depicting sports figures and events from the nineteenth century to the 1930s, and from the 1990s to the present. less

Cecil Layne (1911-1990) was a professional photographer based in Harlem. The Cecil Layne photographs, which primarily date from 1948 to 1960, reflect Layne's work as a commercial photographer and freelance photojournalist. The majority of the collection consists of photographic negatives, while a few enlargement prints, proof prints, contact sheets and related documents are also included. Photographs in the collection frequently depict prominent community members; celebrities; everyday street scenes; nightlife; Harlem businesses; and residential interiors. less
