Angna Enters was a dancer and mime, a painter and writer. She developed nearly 300 separate characters for her touring Theater of Angna Enters from 1928-1960. She was a well-known artist and sculptor. Enters designed and executed all the costumes and props for her performances, and she illustrated several of the books she wrote on her life and work.She died in 1989. less

Godfrey Nelson (1878-1954) was a tax lawyer, financial columnist, and New York Times executive. The Godfrey Nelson papers document much of Nelson's career at The Times, including his roles as corporate secretary, financial and legal advisor, columnist, and in various administrative roles for The Times' subsidiary companies. The collection also contains some files from Nelson's private practice advising clients on estate and tax law. less

Dorothy Schiff (1903-1989) was the publisher of the New York Post, the oldest daily newspaper in the United States, from 1942 to 1976. She wrote a column for the paper and served as editor-in-chief from 1961 until she sold the paper in 1976. She also published the Paris Post in France from 1945 to 1948 and owned several radio stations in New York City, Los Angeles and San Francisco. The collection contains editorial, operational, business, and legal files of the New York Post and Schiff's personal files and family letters. Editorial files, ca. 1938-ca. 1980, consist chiefly of memoranda between Schiff and her editors, columnists and others; materials relating to the editorial operations of the paper; and files, 1944-1948, of the Paris Post. Operational files are mostly memoranda between Schiff and her plant department heads and correspondence concerning the non-editorial operations of the Post. Business files relate to the business side of the paper and radio stations. Legal files reflect the Post's involvement in libel and anti-trust suits. Schiff's personal papers include memoranda and correspondence dealing with her life as a philanthropist and volunteer worker for various causes, family and personal financial papers, and materials for Jeffrey Potter's biography of Schiff. Of particular interest are transcripts of Potter's taped interviews with Schiff and her friends and associates. Also, photographs of Schiff and others; awards and citations she earned; newsclippings of her column; scrapbooks, 1946-1989, of clippings about her; and printed matter. less

Collection contains George's correspondence, 1854-1897; diaries, 1855-1896; manuscripts of his writings; photographs; and family papers documenting nearly every phase of his life and career. Extensive correspondence includes letters to and from George to members of his family, friends and political associates in the Single Tax and Irish nationalist movements in America and abroad. Much of the correspondence also concerns his journalistic work and other writing projects. 1869 letterbook consists of letters relating to his work for the San Francisco Herald and his dealings with the Associated Press. Letterbooks of 1881-1882 contain chiefly letters written from Britain to Patrick Ford, editor of the New York Irish World assessing the policies and actions of the leaders of the Irish Land League and reporting on his lecture tour. less

Arthur Hays Sulzberger was the publisher of xxThe New York Timesxx from 1935 until 1961 and chairman of the board of The New York Times Company from 1961 until 1968. While he was publisher, circulation of The Times almost doubled; the editorial page developed a reputation for strong opinions; news events were subjected to more analysis and coverage of specialized topics was strengthened; new sections and departments were created for food, fashion, and women; and the overall style of the paper became less rigid and more aesthetically pleasing. The papers document Sulzberger's life and career at xxThe New York Timesxx, with the majority of the collection relating to Sulzberger's 26 years as president and publisher of the paper. Included in the collection are correspondence with family members, friends, colleagues, world leaders, and other dignitaries; memoranda regarding the business of the newspaper, including Sulzberger's notes of praise and criticism to his editors, managers, and writers; reports on his meetings with world leaders, including Winston Churchill, Dwight D. Eisenhower, Franklin D. Roosevelt, and Harry S. Truman; and photographs of Sulzberger, his family, business trips, vacations, and The Times' buildings. less
