William Seraile (born 1941) is a noted African American historian, pedagogue, writer, and community activist who was one of the earliest scholars to teach African American history within an academic department focused on Black studies. Seraile played a large role in the establishment of Herbert H. Lehman College's Black Studies department, and taught there for 36 years. The William Seraile photographs, dating from 1919 to 2023, document Seraile's life, family, and career through formal and informal portraits; images from his childhood and young adulthood; photographs of his wife and children; pictures of Seraile receiving awards from Lehman College and the City University of New York (CUNY), and with university colleagues; and photographs of Seraile's extended family. less
