The Butler, Huntington, Smith, Cooke, and Clinch families were united through intermarriage and included prominent lawyers, architects, doctors, judges, politicians, scientists, and land owners hailing from New York City, Long Island, Boston, Cambridge, Lowell, Marblehead, Stockbridge and Worcester, Massachusetts. This collection spans multiple generations and consists of mostly 19th and 20th century family correspondence, financial and legal documents, diaries, writings, scrapbooks, personal miscellany, photographs and genealogical research. Thomas Chamberlain (1814-1891) was an immigrant from England who worked as a printer in the United States. He married Deborah Ann Bugbee in 1845 and became a U.S. citizen in 1859. Chamberlain's diary describes his departure from Portsmouth, England to New York, Franklin (Delaware County), Utica, Niagara, Montreal, Quebec, New York, Philadelphia, London and return to New York. He discusses the food and comforts of second class passengers on shipboard, localities, waterfalls, plays and actors in New York and London, current events, rural life at Franklin, spelling school, apple bees, employment as a journeyman printer at Oxford, Unadilla, Saratoga, and New York, costs of travel, courtship, marriage and family life in New York City. less

The Tilden and Hazard family scrapbooks were assembled by Laura Pelton Hazard. Hazard was granddaughter of Samuel J. Tilden's sister Mary B. Tilden. Laura Pelton married William Ayrault Hazard in 1885; the couple had six children. This collection contains photographs, clippings, letters, programs, and other ephemera and memorabilia related to the Tilden family and the Hazard family. The majority of the materials concern Laura and William Hazard and their children, including photographs that show the family at their home Meadow Hall in Cedarhurst, Long Island, as well as on vacation in various locations. Other material relates to family ancestry, Cedarhurst society, and William Hazard’s polo career. Materials related to Samuel J. Tilden and the Tilden family are largely in volumes 1 and 2 and box 1, and include photographic portraits of Tilden family members; correspondence such as letters written by Samuel Tilden to his parents and sister while he was a student at Yale; and clippings such as political cartoons depicting Tilden. less
