James Lorimer Graham (1804-1882) was an American lawyer specializing in real estate. He was president of the Metropolitan Insurance Company in New York City. Collection consists of printed volume, 1841, containing Graham's statement of case concerning lease of properties in New York City from Peter G. Stuyvesant to Chief Justice Samuel Jones in 1833. John Wakefield Francis (1789-1861) was a physician who co-founded the New York Academy of Medicine. He served as the second president of the Academy, taught at Bellevue Hospital, wrote medical texts, and edited professional journals. Collection consists of correspondence, financial papers, writings, by-laws and minutes, and related papers of Francis and others. Incoming correspondence, 1809-1861, from colleagues, friends and family members and outgoing correspondence, 1808-1860, contain letters of recommendation, petitions and accounts of medical cases. Correspondence of others includes letters to Francis's associates and family members. Financial documents, 1798-1851, are accounts, receipts, receipt books, checks, and collection notices. Writings are speeches, lectures and notes of Francis and others. The New York City Temperance Society was established during the first quarter of the 19th century as an auxiliary society to the New York State Temperance Society. The primary objective of the New York City Temperance Society was to promote total abstinence from alcoholic beverages. They accomplished their objectives via speeches, publications, membership drives and pressure upon the legislative bodies of New York State. Collection consists of minute book with newspaper clippings of the proceedings, 1829-1849, of the New York City Temperance Society executive committee. Minutes are a record of the daily activities of the society to restrict the sale of liquor to the public. less

The first series, 1792-1894, represents the bulk of the papers and consist of letters, certificates of registration for crews and vessels, returns of manifests, documents regarding imports and exports, petitions for various positions and contracts. The second series, 1833-1840, consists of vouchers and receipts that were generated from the construction of a custom house under Commissioners Samuel Swartwout, Walter Bourne and Elisha Tibbits. less

David G. (David Greene) Hubbard (1773-1825), a New York City merchant, was born in Norwich, Connecticut to William Hubbard and his first wife, Lydia Coit. He was established in business in Manhattan by the mid-1790s. In 1825 he also became a director of the New-York City Insurance Company, headed by Elisha Coit. In 1799 David G. Hubbard married Lucy Manwaring (1778-1868) of New London, Connecticut; they had ten children surviving infancy. He died on December 29, 1825. The David G. Hubbard letter book (1 volume, with index) contains Hubbard's copied outgoing business letters and some personal letters dated January 3, 1822 to November 30, 1825, recording wholesale dealings in commodities such as coffee, tea, molasses, sugar, rice, indigo and cotton; the buying and selling of stocks, chiefly shares in American banks; trading in currency; and other investments. Hubbard wrote frequently to Charles E. Dudley of Albany, merchant and politician; Gardiner Greene, a Boston merchant; and the firms Macdonald & Ridgely of Baltimore, and J.D. & M. Williams and Munson & Bernard of Boston, giving detailed reports on prices and current economic conditions. Also included are letters to Coit and Hubbard family members and friends, notably his half-brother, jurist Samuel Hubbard (1785-1847), of Boston. Some concern business matters, but most are written to or about Hubbard's children and his wards, the children of Daniel Jepson, regarding their activities and upbringing. His son and assistant David M. Hubbard (1804-1884) wrote letters on his father's behalf during the City's Yellow Fever epidemic in 1822, and after his own return from a voyage to South America in 1823-1824 as a supercargo. David G. Hubbard's correspondence in the latter part of 1825 reported increasing local business failures and money scarcity, reflecting financial crisis in London, and the impending Panic of 1826. The rear loose endpaper contains a brief note, dated June 1825, recording C. E. Dudley and H. D. Sedgwick's recommendation of Joseph Cogswell and George Bancroft as teachers. less

Henry Meigs (1782-1861) was a New York lawyer, assemblyman, and congressman. He was the recording secretary of the American Institute of the City of New York for the Encouragement of Science and Invention. The Informal Proceedings of the American Institute consist of four volumes dating from 1845 to 1860. The proceedings sometimes function as Meigs' personal diary as well as a record of meetings. The volumes contain Meigs' comments on topics such as agriculture, new technology, developments in industrial production, current events in New York City, and American politics; they also contain personal recollections. Among the subjects of Meigs' entries are the exchange of agricultural specimens, outbreaks of cholera and yellow fever, the Crystal Palace at the Exhibition of the Industry of All Nations, the dangers of steam power, and the likelihood of civil war. Each entry contains notes on the weather, at minimum. The volumes have minor annotations. less
