Hugh Gaine (1726 or 1727-1807) was a prominent American printer, bookseller and newspaper publisher who maintained a flourishing shop in New York City from 1752 to 1804. From 1752 to 1783 he printed and published the New-York Mercury, later the New-York Gazette, and the Weekly Mercury. The Hugh Gaine receipt book, dated 1767 to 1799, contains entries written and signed by recipients of money from Hugh Gaine for expenses relating to his printing and bookselling business, his real estate holdings and, to a lesser extent, his personal and family life. less

The New York City Court of Aldermen was comprised of aldermen who were allowed to sit as justices for certain types of cases. This manuscript documents the court's decisions between October 25, 1797 and March 23, 1798. It serves as a record of federal period crimes in the City of New York such as theft, prostitution, indentured servitude, and assault and the sentences and fines that were issued in response. Aldermen who presided over the court included Theophilus Beekman, Anthony Post, Jotham Post, Jacob De La Montagnie, Richard Furman, Gabriel Furman, and John B. Coles. The Society of Tammany, or Columbian Order, was a fraternal, patriotic and benevolent society founded in New York City in 1786. It was officially organized under a constitution in 1789. The Society played an instrumental role in the development of the Democratic Party in New York during the 19th century, and the name of its meeting place, Tammany Hall, became synonymous with Democratic machine politics in the City. The Society's members influenced local, state and national Party politics into the mid-20th century. The Society of Tammany, or Columbian Order records, dated 1791-1898 and 1916, chiefly document the Society's administration, patriotic fellowship activities, and benevolent work in New York City during the Early National period. The collection consists of the Society's minute books, 1791-1844 (5 volumes); a slipcase of miscellaneous correspondence and documents concerning Society and Democratic Party matters, 1810-1898; and a bound photostat copy, made in 1916, of the Society's constitution and membership roll for the period 1789 to 1916. less

Elizabeth De Hart Bleecker (1781-1864) was the daughter of Anthony Lispenard Bleecker and Mary Noel of New York City. In 1800 she married Alexander Lewis McDonald (1772-1864), a Manhattan lawyer from Bedford, New York. The Elizabeth De Hart Bleecker diary (1 volume) documents her daily life in New York City from 1799 January 1 to 1806 January 11, marking her engagement (1800 March 23), marriage (1800 April 8), and the birth of her children James (1801 August 5) and Mary (1804 July 22). Entries mention the weather, health, social calls and entertainment, attendance at Trinity Church, shopping, household matters and servants, walks to the Battery, and favorite confections such as cake and ice cream. Noted local and current events include frequent alarms of fire; yellow fever epidemics; crimes and public disturbances; the death of George Washington (1799 December); shipping news and a visit to the U.S.S. President (1800 July 9); the laying of the cornerstone at City Hall (1803 May 26); the Burr-Hamilton duel (1804 July 11-13); and other matters. The diary also records an extended stay in Bedford (1803 August-November) to escape an outbreak of yellow fever in Manhattan. Births, marriages and deaths in their circle of prominent New York families are noted throughout. The family name McDonald is spelled MacDonald in the early part of the diary. less
