Jack Cunningham (1882-1941) was a Hollywood screenwriter and producer who worked primarily for Paramount Pictures, and developed material for many prominent stars, including Douglas Fairbanks, Barbara Stanwyck, W.C. Fields and Harold Lloyd. Cunningham began his career as a screenwriter in 1913, and had written over seventy screenplays before his epic Western THE COVERED WAGON, one of the biggest box office successes of the silent film era, brought him acclaim in 1923. In the years that followed he specialized in Westerns, and also wrote a number of swashbucklers for Douglas Fairbanks, such as THE BLACK PIRATE (1926) and THE IRON MASK (1929). In the mid-1930s Cunningham turned to comedy, writing several films for W.C. Fields including IT'S A GIFT and THE OLD-FASHIONED WAY (both 1934), MISSISSIPPI (1935), and POPPY (1936). Cunningham also wrote PROFESSOR BEWARE for Harold Lloyd in 1938 before returning to Westerns with the Cecil B. DeMille production UNION PACIFIC in 1939. Jack Cunningham died in Santa Monica, Calif, on Oct. 4, 1941, at the age of 59. The Jack Cunningham papers consist primarily of correspondence pertaining to Cunningham's screenwriting career, especially two of his biggest successes, the epic Westerns THE COVERED WAGON (1923) and UNION PACIFIC (1939). Although there are several letters documenting a variety of Jack Cunningham's professional activities in the early to mid-1930s, the bulk of the collection is devoted to his work on these two films. In the case of THE COVERED WAGON the crew went on location to Utah in the autumn of 1922 while Cunningham remained in Los Angeles, reviewing the footage they sent back and writing detailed letters about it to director James Cruze. For UNION PACIFIC Cunningham travelled to Nebraska and Wyoming in the spring of 1938 to engage in preliminary research, and corresponded primarily with producer/director Cecil B. DeMille and his assistant William Pine, who remained in California. Cunningham also corresponded with local historians and with a number of elderly residents who participated in the construction of the Union Pacific railroad in the 1860s. less

Herbert Mitgang (1920- ), author, editor, journalist, and motion-picture producer, was managing editor of the U.S. Army newspaper Stars and Stripes, during World War II. After his war service, he joined the New York Times as a copy editor and reviewer. He served as supervising editor of the Sunday Times drama section from 1955 to 1962, editorial writer and member of the editorial board from 1963 to 1964 and again from 1967 to 1976. From 1964 to 1967 he was assistant to the president and the executive editor of CBS News and produced several documentary films. He taught at City College in New York, was a visiting lecturer at Yale University and served as president of both the Authors' League and the Authors' Guild. Since 1976 Mitgang has been a cultural correspondent and book reviewer for the New York Times. In addition to his work at the Times and CBS, he has written articles, novels and biographies and has edited several books. Collection consists of correspondence, writings, files relating to publications, notes, clippings, photographs, motion pictures, recordings, videotapes, and memorabilia that document Mitgang's activities as a journalist, author, editor, and film producer. Papers include general correspondence, 1945-1979; New York Times editorial correspondence, 1970-1976; and correspondence concerning Authors' Guild, 1957-1979, Authors' League, 1962-1973, and Times Op-Ed page. Also, typescripts, notes, clippings, and other materials for his articles, reviews, biographies, novels, scripts, and other writings; and files, 1983-1988, collected by Mitgang for his book Dangerous Dossiers. Other items consist of photographs, notebooks, awards, teaching notes, clippings, Stars and Stripes scrapbook, cartoons, and memorabilia. Materials relating to his documentaries include scripts and notes, films, videotapes and audio recordings of programs produced for CBS News; these include documentaries on Carl Sandburg, Henry Moore, and Jimmy Walker, and interviews with David Ben-Gurion, Anthony Eden, Admiral Gene R. He also formed the Kleine Optical Company to handle the rental of projection apparatus and other accessories for new films. Collection consists of ledgers, journals and registers of the George Kleine Company; ledgers of the Kleine Optical Company; university and college film rental reports; balance sheets of Kleine's production of the movie "Gloria's Romance"; and movie posters. less

William Churchill De Mille (1878-1955) was an American playwright, producer and director. He wrote a number of stage plays and produced them with David Belasco from 1902 to 1914 before becoming one of the pioneers of the motion picture industry. He founded the drama department at the University of Southern California and taught there until 1953. Collection consists of manuscripts and typescripts of De Mille's writings. Writings include play scripts, scenarios, lectures, reminiscences of his career in the motion picture industry, and typescript of children's fairy tale he co-authored. less

Emile Ardolino (1943-1993) was a prolific director, producer, editor, and multimedia designer for television, film, and theater productions. He was best known for directing the Academy Award-winning documentary He Makes Me Feel Like Dancin,' the sleeper film Dirty Dancing, and the comedy hit Sister Act. Ardolino's papers date from the 1950s to the 1990s, and chronicle his professional career primarily through video and sound recordings, production materials, posters, notes, correspondence, programs, photographs, contracts, artifacts, and plaques. While most of the collection comes from Adolino's work as a director and sometime-producer of feature films, television series, and television movies, his early work in multimedia design, acting, and film editing is also represented. less
