The Hosea Hudson Papers document this labor leader and communist organizer's political activities in Alabama and the Communist Party's attitude toward labor and the rights of African Americans. The bulk of the collection, dating from 1952 to 1958, consists mainly of Communist Party material: reports, memoranda, resolutions and printed matter. Subjects reflected in these papers are labor-unions, farm labor, unemployment, industrial workers, segregation, and the right of African Americans to vote. Hudson's writings are represented by drafts of two books: "Black Worker in the Deep South: A Personal Record" Written by Hudson (1972) and "The Narrative of Hosea Hudson: His Life as a Negro Communist in the South" written by Nell Irvin Painter (1979), and of several unpublished works, in addition to book reviews, notes and some correspondence. Hudson's intensive trade-union involvement at the Wallwork Foundry of the Tennessee Coal and Railroad Company and the Jackson Foundry in the 1930's and 1940's are sparsely documented.

Records of the Negro Labor Committee encompassing historical and activity records, general subject and activity files, records of affiliated unions and locals, and personal files of Frank R. Crosswaith. Historical and activity files include records of predecessor organizations of the Committee, the Trade Union Committee for Organizing Negro Workers, 1925, and the Harlem Labor Committee, 1934, and items summarizing the Committee's general interests and activities from its founding in 1935 to 1969. Records contain general correspondence, minutes, committee reports, financial records, form letters, and related materials. General subject and activity files of the Committee include material on conferences and conventions in which the Committee participated, documents relating to activities and special projects of the Committee such as the Harlem Labor Center, Scholarship Benefit Fund, Negro Labor Committee-U.S.A., anniversary journals, and the proposed March on Washington in 1943. Also, minutes of the Negro Labor Assembly, of which the Committee was an integral part, and press releases of the Negro Labor News Service, 1935-1951. In addition, the collection contains files from the individual unions which were affiliated with the Committee and which joined in many of its projects, programs, and activities. Files present a cross section of the progressive labor movement in New York City during the 1930s and 1940s.

Black Panther Black Community News Service was founded in 1967 as part of the Black Panther Party's consciousness-raising program. It was the leading Black weekly periodical in the nation at the height of its popularity from 1968 to 1972. The newspaper released its final issue on September 16, 1980, two years before the Party's formal dissolution in 1982. The Black Panther Black Community News Service collection is made up primarily of news issues from Black Panther Black Community News Service, but also contains a few issues of other progressive publications from the same time period.
