In 1880 the Woman's Christian Temperance Union (WCTU) created a Dept. of Scientific Temperance Instruction, headed by Mary H. Hunt (1830-1906), to disseminate medical and social facts about alcohol. After Hunt's death, Cora F. Stoddard (1872-1936) continued the work through the Scientific Temperance Federation (STF) of Boston. Collection consists of correspondence and printed matter concerning temperance. Correspondence, 1883-1918, includes letters to Hunt and Stoddard relating to their activities on behalf of the WCTU and the STF. Also, one folder of printed temperance materials. less

George B. Hillard was active in the Prohibition Party, the Young People's Prohibition League and a variety of other prohibition organizations in New York City from the 1880s through 1914. He ran for state and local office and served as a local trade union official. Collection consists of correspondence, notes, memoranda, scrapbooks of clippings, and other printed matter mainly concerning the Prohibition Party. Prohibition Party records comprise approximately half of the collection and contain letters to Hillard, minutes, notes, accounts, and printed matter such as party pamphlets, announcements, circulars, posters, programs, handbooks, and maps. Materials from various prohibition groups include mostly printed items issued by organizations ranging from local clubs to national organizations. Printed material and letters to Hillard document banquet, conference, entertainment, and travel arrangements he made for prohibition groups. Personal and miscellaneous papers relate to both personal and prohibition matters and scrapbooks contain clippings of articles about prohibition news in New York and nationally. less
