Henry Draper (1837-1882), an American astronomer, was a pioneer in astronomical photography. Collection consists of Draper's correspondence, 1869-1882, with astronomers and others relating to astronomy, astronomical photography, spectroscopy, scientific work being carried out by Draper and his colleagues; and correspondence between Draper and his father, Dr. John William Draper. Also, page proofs of John William Draper's book History of the Conflict Between Religion and Science, photographs, sketches, diagrams, charts, certificates, medal, and printed matter. Bulk of the collection is correspondence, 1879-1914, of Mary Anna Palmer Draper dealing with her collection of antiquities, her husband's work and family matters; scrapbook of letters and writings; and artifacts. less

James Ferguson (1710-1776) was a Scottish philosopher, astronomer and engineer. Collection consists of scrapbook containing letters, ca. 1769-1775, by Ferguson, relating to his work and other scientific matters; drawings, pencil sketches, charts, and tables, both printed and original, dating from approximately the 1740s, of astronomical and mechanical discoveries and inventions by Ferguson and others; and materials about Ferguson including maps, clippings, engravings of portraits of Ferguson, and other items. less

Wilhelm Weitling (1808-1871) was a German-born tailor, inventor and editor. In Germany he worked as a journeyman tailor and was a prominent socialist agitator. After emigrating to the U.S. in 1848, he organized an Arbeiterbund or "Workingmen's League" for skilled craftsmen and established a community in Iowa based on his socio-economic theories. He also was the founder and editor of Die Republik der Arbeiter in New York City from 1850 to 1855. Collection consists of Weitling's correspondence, writings, patents and plans, memorabilia, and miscellaneous papers. Correspondence, 1844-1903, contains letters to and from members of the Weitling family, and correspondence and papers relating to the colonies of the Workingmen's League. Patents and plans, 1861-1868, are for improvements to the sewing machine. Writings include a journal, 1855-1869, and papers on his theories of astronomy. Tiffany Ellsworth Thayer (1902-1959) was an American actor, reporter, motion picture scenarist, and author of thirteen novels. He founded the Fortean Society, an organization dedicated to continuing the work of Charles Fort (1874-1932), a journalist, writer and investigator of occult phenomena. Collection contains manuscripts, typescripts and research notes for Thayer's writings; papers of George F. Gillette and Alfred H. Barley relating to astronomy and astrology; and notes and other materials collected by Charles Fort on occult phenomena. Literary manuscripts and typescripts consist of drafts of Thayer's novels and short stories. Gillette's papers include letters, 1934-1936, from librarians acknowledging receipt of his works and correspondence relating to astronomical theory. Barley's papers contain his correspondence, 1914-1930, and manuscripts and notes by Barley on astronomy and astrology.
