The Edith Evans Braun Collection highlights the history of American music in the early and mid twentieth century. The collection shows various details of the lives and careers of notable music figures of the period through the memoirs and diaries of Edith Evans Braun, a pianist and director at the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia. Of strong interest in the collection are the music manuscript sketches by emerging composers (Deems Taylor, Samuel Barber) of the period, and signed and dedicated published scores. There are also letters and photographs from Taylor, Barber, Gian Carlo Menotti, Josef Hoffman, and others. The period covered in the collection is from 1916 to 1971. less

Alexis Kudisch (1878-1947) was a concert violinist, born and trained in Russia, who moved to New York City and pursued a symphonic career. He eventually led his own string quartet, working around the United States. Bella Kudisch Weinberg (1912-2002) was Kudisch’s oldest child. The bulk of the collection consists of background material, notes and drafts of A Musical Odyssey, her unpublished book about her father’s life and career. less

The Toscanini Legacy collection of sound recordings forms a part of the Toscanini Legacy housed at The New York Public Library. The recordings collection consists of acetate discs, shellac discs, vinyl discs, reel tapes, Selenophone recordings, kinescope films, and metal parts for 78 rpm recordings. It includes a set of 1926 La Scala rehearsals for concerts on October 7-9, 1926, then skips to the 1939/40 season, beginning with the rehearsals on April 10-12, 1940. The collection contains comprehensive holdings of rehearsals from the 1946/47 season to the 1953/54 season, as well as performance recordings from the 1932/33 season through the 1953/54 season, and recording sessions from 1920 to 1954. less

Broadcasting organization of the United States government founded in 1941 as a division of the Office of War Information. The Voice of America recorded radio programs from commercial radio stations in the United States and rebroadcast them in Europe. The collection contains a wide variety of musical programs prepared for rebroadcast over Voice of America stations. Included in the Archives' holdings are: various Bing Crosby shows (including Kraft Music Hall, Chesterfield, and Philco Radio time), Ford Evening Hour, and Harvest of Stars radio programs. Also included are performances of various symphony orchestras including: the Boston Symphony, New York Philharmonic, NBC Symphony, and Philadelphia Orchestra, as well as recordings of the American Music Festival and the Festival of the American Music. less

The collection contains acetate and radio transcription disc recordings primarily of Taylor's spoken word radio programs dating from 1935 to 1954. Included are samples of his work on shows such as Information Please, Coronet, Swift's Studio Party, as well as special radio shows such as the ASCAP Cavalcade of Music, and memorial tributes to Stephen Vincent Benet and Jerome Kern. less
