Gabriel Banat is an American violinist who played for many years with the New York Philarmonic. He was born in Transylvania, Romania in 1926, eventually moving to Hungary. At the age of eight, he was discovered by Béla Bartók, who enabled him to be accepted at the Royal Academy in Budapest (now the Franz Liszt Academy of Music), where he won honors. In 1946 he moved to New York City where he toured with Georges Enesco, his mentor. He became a naturalized citizen in 1953. He toured in the United States, Europe and Japan, and was guest soloist with the London Philharmonic, Oslo Philharmonic, among others. In 1970 he joined the New York Philharmonic. He was a professor at Smith College where he led the violin department. He also conducted various ensembles and organizations during his career. His research on Mozart led to publication in facsimile of Mozart's five violin concertos (Raven Press, 1986). His research on the Chevalier de Saint-Georges led to a biography (Pendragon Press, 2006) as well as numerous articles. He also edited the series "Masters of the Violin" (1981-1982). The Mott Haven Branch of The New York Public Library, located at 140th Street and Alexander Avenue in the Bronx, opened in 1905. The library building was designed by the architectural firm of Babb, Cook and Willard and was constructed with funds provided by Andrew Carnegie. It was modeled after Carnegie's residence (now the Cooper-Hewitt Museum) and is the oldest public library building in the Bronx. The original cost of the three-story, 15,342 sq. ft. building was $96,796. The Mott Haven Branch served as headquarters of the Bronx Bookmobile from 1953-1979. In 1967, Mott Haven was one of eight NYPL branches to participate in the South Bronx Project, an effort to introduce new services in predominantly Spanish-speaking neighborhoods. The Project employed Spanish-speaking staff, established collections of Spanish and bilingual materials, and presented library programs in cooperation with social service agencies. Parnassus: Poetry in Review, a journal devoted to long reviews of new books of poetry and in depth retrospective essays covering the careers of particular poets, was founded in 1972 by Herbert Leibowitz (Editor) and Stanley Lewis (Publisher). In 1975, Leibowitz purchased the magazine from Lewis and set up the non-profit Poetry in Review Foundation whose only function was to publish Parnassus. Leibowitz assumed the duties of publisher in addition to his duties as editor. The Parnassus: Poetry in Review Records (1971-1996) consist mostly of general and editorial correspondence and revised and corrected typescripts, authors' galleys, and page proofs of pieces which appeared in the magazine. The correspondence also traces editor Herbert Leibowitz's personal and professional relationships with many notable and aspiring writers, poets, critics, artists, and academics. The records include additional editorial files, such as interoffice communications and readers' reports, typescripts of rejected or otherwise unpublished submissions to the magazine, art and photographs, administrative and financial files, sound recordings and electronic media. less
