The Richard Sutton genealogical research papers contain family papers dating from 1801 to 1886, and Sutton's research notes, copies of documents, and correspondence generated by his research on the Sutton and Steele families. The family documents are largely papers of members of the Steele family of New York City, in particular Sutton's great-grandfather, William Steele. Allied families represented in his research files include the Brown, Davison, Falconer, Ostrom, Seger, Smith, Stymets, Vaughan, Wisner, and Woodruff families, all of New York and the surrounding areas. less

William Steele (1762-1851) and his wife Mary Dayton Steele (1769-1834) resided with their family in New Jersey and later moved to upstate New York. William Steele was born in New York City and served in the Revolutionary War. In 1791 he married Mary Dayton, daughter of physician Jonathan Dayton (1731-1778) of Springfield, New Jersey. The Steele family moved from New Jersey to Painted Post, Steuben County, New York in 1819. William Steele died in Big Flats, Chemung County, New York in 1851. An album of original verse by William Steele (1762-1851), inspired by incidents of personal and family life, life events, and celebrations, as well as local, historical and political events. Dated poems span 1781-1850, with earlier poems noting the locations of Springfield and other places in New Jersey, and later poems noting the locations of Painted Post and Big Flats, both near Corning, New York. Poems marking births, marriages and deaths provide genealogical information on members of the Steele, Dayton, Salter and Winans families, and other individuals. A note by William Steele pasted inside the front cover states that the poems have been transcribed for the pleasure of his family and friends. A "Genealogy of the Steele Family of Springfield, N.J.," compiled from the poems at a later date, is pasted inside the back cover. Also present is a 12-page pamphlet, "Elegy on the Rt. Honorable William Pitt, late Earl of Chatham on his accepting a peerage" (Boston, 1808; Shaw & Shoemaker 14692), and a few research notes. less

Charles Robert Knight (1874-1953) was an artist, writer and paleontologist. He did paintings and models of prehistoric animals for the U.S. government and museums in New York City and elsewhere. He also painted a series of murals for the American Museum of Natural History. In addition to his art work, Knight wrote books and articles on animal anatomy and psychology and on prehistoric man. Collection consists of correspondence, writings, sketches, photographs, and printed matter. Correspondence, 1892-1952, is with museums, libraries, societies, academic institutions, magazine and newspaper publishers, and associates and relates to Knight's work as an artist and writer. Family correspondence, 1885-1949, includes letters between Knight and Hardcastle family members. Correspondence of Lucy Knight Steel, 1847-1964, concerns her father's work as well as her work and family. Writings of Charles R. Knight contain typescripts and drafts of his work, including his autobiography. Also, papers of the Hardcastle and Steel families, photographs of Knight and his work, sketches, and printed matter. less
