Charles Ranlett Flint (1850-1934) was a financial capitalist, merchant and industrial consolidator. He entered the shipping business and worked for commission merchants in New York City. Popularly known as the "Father of Trusts", he was responsible for many industrial consolidations and mergers. Collection consists of correspondence, agreements, memoranda, minutes, commercial codes, financial statements, securities accounts, and patent and shipping papers which reflect Flint's multifarious and far-flung business activities in America, South America, Russia, and China. Included are papers relating to industrial mergers; rubber goods manufacturing on Long Island (N.Y.); the financing of the United States Rubber Company; the purchase and re-organization of the New York Times Company; the paving of the streets of Manaus, Brazil; a new submarine engine; proposals for railways between Guayaquil and Quito in Ecuador and between Alaska and Siberia; the supplying of munitions and cartridge belts to the Russian army; and the provision of loans to Russia and to China for railway development and to the Sultan of Turkey for the purchase of naval vessels. Also, correspondence of Flint as chairman of the American Committee for the Encouragement of Democratic Government in Russia. Personal miscellaneous papers include his receipts while travelling abroad, personal press clippings, photographs, and printed matter. less

James Abbott McNeill Whistler (1834-1903) was an American artist. Collection consists of papers of James McNeill Whistler; his mother, Anna M. Whistler; and father, George Washington Whistler (1800-1849) a noted railroad engineer. Items include letters by the artist; a diary kept by his mother in St. Petersburg, Russia, from Nov. 1843 to Sept. 1848; and copies of a report written by his father. Also, copyprints of photographs and portraits of members of the Whistler family, copies of articles about James McNeill Whistler, and family documents. less

Joseph Gardner Swift (1783-1865) was a civil engineer and officer in the U.S. Army. He was one of two students of the first graduating class in 1802 of the U.S. Military Academy at West Point. By the age of twenty-eight he was a colonel and Chief Engineer of the Army. His projects included the completion of Fort Clinton (New York City) and during the War of 1812 the fortifications of western Long Island harbors and New York City. He resigned his commission in 1818 and served as Surveyor of the Port of New York until 1826, then as chief engineer for several railroads, and in 1829 he directed harbor improvements on the Great Lakes. Swift also was involved in a variety of business activities and was a friend and mentor to younger engineers including George Washington Whistler and William Gibbs McNeill (both of them were his brothers-in-law). Collection consists entirely of correspondence of Swift and members of his family. Most of the letters, 1825-1857, were written to Swift from his brother, William Henry Swift, and from his brother-in-law, George Washington Whistler. Whistler's letters include several written from Russia while he was working on construction of the Moscow/St. Petersburg railroad. Also, correspondence of Swift and Whistler, 1809-1862, with various correspondents, and letters exchanged among members of the Swift, Whistler and McNeill families. less
