John Edward Heys is an actor/filmmaker/director/writer who performed with numerous performance groups including the Angels of Light and Charles Ludlam's Ridiculous Theatrical Company. He worked with numerous artists including Charles Ludlam, Ethyl Eichelberger, Jackie Curtis, Cookie Mueller, Bill Vehr, Tomata du Plenty, and Gary Indiana. Heys also created several one man shows including his portrayal of Diana Vreeland and La Mamounia; directed Alba Clemente in Rene Ricard's translation of Jean Cocteau's A Human Voice; and created a documentary about Charlotte von Mahlsdorf. The collection contains materials related to the people and personalities whom Heys knew and the performances that Heys was involved in or attended. A significant portion of the collection concerns performances Heys created. Materials also concern Charles Ludlam, the Ridiculous Theatrical Company, Jackie Curtis, and Cookie Mueller. Consists of 83 sound cassettes, each representing one or more taped interviews of people involved with Charles Ludlam and/or the Ridiculous Theatrical Company. All interviews were conducted by David Kaufman as source material for his book "Ridiculous! : the theatrical life and times of Charles Ludlam," or other articles written about Ludlam, the company, and his associates. Interviewees include: Eric Bentley, John Brockmeyer, Black Eyed Susan, David Hockney, Madeline Kahn, Lola Pashalinski, Steven Samuels, and Christopher Scott, among others. less

Charles Ludlam, actor, director, and playwright, was born April 12, 1943. He began his career in 1966 with the PlayHouse of the Ridiculous, both as a performer and playwright. Artistic differences caused Ludlam to leave and form his own company, The Ridiculous Theatrical Company, which achieved international recognition. Ludlam's three most successful plays were BLUEBEARD, STAGE BLOOD, and CAMILLE. Although the company attracted grant funding, it was always on the edge of the avant-garde and finances were uncertain. The company made its final tour with Ludlam in the first months of 1980 and then disbanded. Ludlam died on May 28, 1987. The collection consists of diaries, notebooks, scripts, set and costume designs, clippings, transcripts of interviews, and manuscript pages from a published collection of Ludlam's plays. This material was collected as research material for The Complete Plays of Charles Ludlam. The material provides valuable insight into every stage of Ludlam's playwriting process from the development of an idea to its realization on stage. Since Ludlam relied so heavily on improvisation, the information contained in the notebooks and plot outlines in this collection cannot be found anywhere else. less
