Design drawings by G. W. Mercier in black and white watercolor for the film Fool's Fire, adapted and directed by Julie Taymor from the Edgar Allan Poe story, Hop-Frog. Taymor's first film, Fool's Fire, premiered at the Sundance Film Festival, won best drama award at the Tokyo International Electronic Cinema Festival and was broadcast in March 1992 on the PBS television series, American Playhouse. Taymor designed the puppets, masks and costumes for the production which used live actors behind the masks with the exception of the two dwarfs who were unmasked. The primary subject of this collection of family papers is the life of Edwin Booth, one of the most famous American actors of the 19th century. However, it has not been titled the Edwin Booth Papers because the bulk of the collection would more accurately be described as the papers of his daughter and biographer, Edwina Booth Grossman. There is also a small amount of material on other family members including Booth's father, the actor Junius Brutus Booth, his brother, the notorious John Wilkes Booth, and other relatives with less impact on history. less
