Collection consists of correspondence, writings, notes and transcripts, student notes and notebooks, diaries, scrapbooks, photographs, miscellaneous papers, and printed matter. General correspondence, 1862-1938, is between Ford and historians, librarians, scholars, writers, publishers, booksellers, and lawyers, including extensive correspondence with Charles Francis Adams, Henry Cabot Lodge, James Ford Rhodes, and John Franklin Jameson. Family correspondence, 1870-1935, is chiefly incoming letters from many members of Ford's family. Most of the writings are drafts or hand-written manuscripts for works which Ford authored or edited and are concerned with American history and economics. Notes and transcripts are comprised of numerous transcripts of historical letters and other documents with research notes, annotated printed matter, and notebooks (some from Ford's student days.) Diaries, 1873-1918, contain brief entries concerning Ford's activities, and scrapbooks, ca. 1898-1931, consist mostly of clippings and other materials on a particular subject. Photographs are of Ford family members and of various personal and public subjects. Miscellaneous papers include personal papers, writings by individuals other than Ford, records of organizations with which he was affiliated, genealogical documents and biographical sketches of the Fowler and Chauncey families, financial accounts, and ephemera. less

Francis Randall Hagner (1873-1940), a collector of Americana, practiced medicine in Washington, D.C. A specialist in genito-urinary surgery, he was an attending physician to U.S. President William H. Taft. Collection consists of typed copies of letters, diaries, articles, court martial proceedings, and printed matter concerning General George A. Custer and the Battle of the Little Big Horn in 1876. Typed transcripts are of the writings of participants in the campaign as well as contemporary and later commentators on the Indian Wars. Among the transcripts are accounts of the battle, commentary on Custer's participation in the Battle of the Washita in 1868, Custer's 1867 court martial, 1876 diary and article by General E.S. Godfrey, Court of Inquiry of Major Marcus A. Reno, and manuscript autobiography of Major General George Crook. Also, clippings and articles on the Indian Wars and related topics. less

Charles Alexander Nelson (1839-1933), librarian and bibliographer, was a Reconstruction administrator in New Bern, North Carolina, for a decade following the U.S. Civil War. He returned to the North in 1875 and worked until 1909 in various libraries. He published bibliographies, indexed books and organizational records, wrote articles, and was a founding member in 1876 of the American Library Association. Collection consists of correspondence, manuscripts, legal and financial documents, reports, organizational records, scrapbooks, photographs, and printed matter that document Nelson's career. Bulk of the collection is correspondence, 1859-1930s, concerning his work in North Carolina after the Civil War, his positions at the Astor, Howard Memorial, Newberry, and Columbia College libraries, and his activities as a bibliographer, indexer and writer. Also, Nelson's papers from his years in New Bern, 1865-1876; Howard Memorial Library reports, 1889-1891; records, 1880s-1900s, of various organizations to which he belonged; writings including his history of Waltham, Mass.; and personal and miscellaneous materials. less
