Scope and arrangement
This is a synthetic collection consisting of manuscripts, typescripts, correspondence to, from, and about the author, a journal for 1868 and 1869, legal documents, portraits, and pictorial works. The manuscripts and typescripts include poems, essays, articles, stories, lectures and criticism. The correspondence includes letters written by the author, dating from 1852 to 1908, to Mary Albertina Amelung Hawthorne, his father Nathaniel Hawthorne, his mother Sophia Peabody Hawthorne, his sister Una Hawthorne, DeWitt Miller, his grandmother Elizabeth Palmer Peabody, and others. There are also letters relating to the author, dating from 1866 to [1879], between various individuals including Richard D. Blackmore and Sophia Peabody Hawthorne. There are letters to Julian Hawthorne from Henry Mills Alden, Francis Bennoch, Bliss Carman, Thomas A. Edison, Eugene Field, Edward Kemeys, Herman Melville, Charles Scribner, and others, including members of the Hawthorne family, Sophia, Una, and Rose Hawthorne Lathrop, dating from 1852 to 1908.
