Scope and arrangement
This is a synthetic collection that includes manuscripts, correspondence, and financial documents. The manuscripts include a holograph of an essay by Shelley and a transcription of a Shelley poem in Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley's hand. Also included are manuscript materials by Leigh Hunt and Humbert Wolf relating to Shelley. The financial documents include bank drafts, one of which is a forgery. The correspondence includes letters, dating from 1809 to 1822, by the author to Claire Claremont, Edward Fergus Graham, Leigh Hunt, and others, as well as a copies of letters in Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley's hand to her from Shelley. Also included are letters relating to the author, dating from 1838 to 1908, exchanged between various correspondents including Richard Garnett, Herbert Jones, Thomas Holcroft, Lady Jane Shelley, Spencer Shelley, Charles Fairfax Murray, H. Buxton Forman, Paola Clairmont, Henry Roderick Newman, Susan Shelley, Rosamund Dent, and others. The correspondence also includes an inventory of letters and notes pertaining to the estate of Claire Claremont with certificate of their sale by Paola Clairmont to Henry Roderick. There is a letter to Shelley from Thomas Hookham, dated Dec. 13, 1816.
