Scope and arrangement
This is a synthetic collection consisting of manuscripts, typescripts, correspondence, a diary for 1911-1933, an undated notebook, legal documents, portraits and pictorial works. The manuscripts include holographs from "A Christmas Garland," "The Dreadful Dragon of Hay Hill," and other essays; notes toward works, and short stories. The typescripts include essays, stories, and contributions to a collection of tributes to the author for his 80th birthday. The legal documents include agreements and royalty statements for the author and the author's will. The correspondence includes letters, from 1885 to 1955, from the author to Edmund Gosse, Selwyn Jepson, Sir Edward Howard Marsh, and others. Also present are letters relating to the author and his 80th birthday tribute album, dating from 1903 to 1964, between various correspondents including Clive Bell, Robert W. Fenn, William Heinemann, Ltd., Selwyn Jepson, and others. There are letters to Beerbohm from Selwyn Jepson, W. S. Maugham, Bernard Shaw, and others, dating from 1898 to 1956.
The Max Beerbohm collection of papers are arranged in four series:
