While developing the plot of <span class=\"title\">The Bonfire of the Vanities</span>, Wolfe shadowed a New York City police officer in the Bronx, interviewed judges and attorneys, and reviewed criminal court transcripts to create a realistic portrayal of the criminal justice system in New York City in the late 1980s. Research files also include his notes on Wall Street traders and research into government bonds that formed plot points about Sherman McCoy and his sale of the French <span class=\"title\">Giscard</span>. Outlines contain detailed plot descriptions and chapter outlines, with lists of scenes and events to research for the book. Early versions of <span class=\"title\">The Bonfire of the Vanities</span>—also known as \"Lustre,\" and in which the story is set outside of New York City—are arranged under Early Drafts and Early Culls. Manuscript 1 is a partial version of the chapters serialized in <span class=\"title\">Rolling Stone</span>, which differ from the published novel. Manuscripts 2 and 3 contain additional chapters and changes to characters and plot that were added between serialization and book publication.</p>"}
