{"value"=>"<p>The first volume only of a series of eleven registers used to record claim applications. Entries are arranged chronologically by date of first transaction and include claim number assigned by the Agency (1-969), government-assigned number, type of claim, claimant name, soldier name, rank, regiment, address, note on soldier's condition or basis for claim, action taken by agency and date taken, resolution of claim, and date resolved. The volume is identified as \"Claim Book No. 1.\" Ashman's letter of 1870 Jul 14 to John S. Blatchford (see New York, NY Archives record group, Series IV.A Historical Bureau Office letters received) states that he was forwarding the first volume to give an indication of the size of the remaining ten, which he wished to retain temporarily to finish prosecuting remaining claims, and to write a final report. Those volumes are not found in the collection.</p>"}
