Types of documents range widely and include claim petitions, soldiers' letters to their families, letters to and from soldiers and other claimants by the Philadelphia office and others, receipts for returned discharge papers and payment certificates, soldiers’ descriptive lists, documents providing evidence of marriage, and sworn witness statements given to county clerks. Although the contents of this group of records sometimes overlap with those of other series, they reached the USSC’s Historical Bureau as a miscellaneous group of their own.
