{"value"=>"
Correspondence consists of PWCA’s incoming and outgoing correspondence regarding the prosecution of claims and USSC administrative matters, and letters sent and received by its agent George P. Randlette while at ANCA in Washington. Also present is the claim-related correspondence of E.P. Brook, dating prior to his employment with PWCA.

Letters received are from the following categories of correspondents as arranged and identified by staff: Miscellaneous, Government Departments, and the United States Sanitary Commission.

Miscellaneous correspondents include claimants, military officers, surgeons, PWCA Executive Board members, as well as staff from various USSC departments and branches. Government Departments comprise letters from the U.S. departments most frequently in contact with PWCA concerning claim applications: the Department of the Interior’s Pension Office and the Second and Fourth Auditors of the Treasury Department. Letters from other government departments can be found in Miscellaneous correspondence. For a description of materials typically found for particular government departments see ANCA correspondence. Sanitary Commission letters from J.B. Abbott of the Special Relief Department, Darius Forbes and W.F. Bascom of ANCA, and George B. Randlette, PWCA’s agent at ANCA in Washington, also include some discussion of office procedures. Randlette’s own incoming and outgoing correspondence at Washington is arranged separately. Within each series of correspondents, letters are arranged chronologically by month, and roughly by date written within. Date order may be ascending or descending.

Copies of outgoing letters sent by the secretary or assistant secretary on similar topics are arranged under the same categories, with the additional inclusion of letters requesting documentary evidence from various parties as required for claims.
"}
