Each envelope identifies an individual claimant transaction, recording the information found in the registers. Occasionally letters and additional papers are also present. Remittances in envelopes correlate to entries in Registers A and B above, loose receipts span all registers. Remittance receipts are also found in claim files.</p> <p>Register and page numbers noted on jackets refer to the original claim registers for that type of claim where the main entry for that claim can be found; they do not refer to remittance registers. Date of remittance often lists two dates in close proximity; the later date appears in the remittance registers. Many envelopes bear a number, usually in red ink, at the top center. Their purpose has not been determined. Receipt forms varied over time; those dating from the time period of Register C allow for entry of claim, settlement and transmittal numbers.</p> <p>Remittance receipts are in alphabetical order by first initial of claimant or soldier surname.</p>"}
