{"value"=>"<p>The incoming correspondence of Edward Stratemeyer and the Stratemeyer Syndicate spans the years 1894-1949. The earliest letters describe the beginning of Edward Stratemeyer's literary career and his first efforts to market his own stories and books. Of particular interest are letters he received from Horatio Alger during the years 1894-1899. Correspondence from 1905-1930 focuses on Stratemeyer's work as editor and salesman of material written by ghostwriters, and includes letters from authors, publishers and readers. After Edward Stratemeyer's death in 1930, Syndicate correspondence was carried forward by Harriet Otis Smith, Harriet Stratemeyer Adams and Edna Stratemeyer Squier. For several years they maintained these chronologically arranged files, but eventually began a new subseries of alphabetically arranged Subject Files (described below as Subseries 1.6). The transition from one system to another resulted in some inconsistencies in the filing of letters dating from 1930-49. Readers interested in this period are advised to consult the Stratemeyer Syndicate incoming files in conjunction with the Subject Files. Correspondence contained in boxes 1-19 is fragile and has been microfilmed; researchers must use the microfilm version of this material.</p>"}
