{"value"=>"<p>The Books subseries includes manuscript and typescript drafts (many with editorial corrections), fragments of drafts and discarded sheets, a few page proofs and galley sheets of several of Bakeless's published biographical and historical writings including Background to Glory, Confederate Spy Stories, Fighting Frontiersman, The Life of Daniel Boone, Spies of the Confederacy, They Saw America First, and Traitors, Turncoats, and Heroes. There are also fragments of his Christopher Marlowe, The Man in His Time, and Lewis and Clark, Partners in Discovery.</p> <p>There are also drafts of five unpublished (book-length) manuscripts:</p> <p>(1) untitled drafts (dated 1971-76) of a personal and anecdotal story of the American Revolution (similar in conception to Bakeless's book on Daniel Boone);</p> <p>(2) a typescript draft (with extensive corrections and emendations) entitled \"How It Was\", conceived as a sequel to Eyes of Discovery, and which attempts to describe America as the white man made it (noting the forgotten minutiae of popular culture (\"food, dress, drinking, smoking, travel, chewing gum, ice cream and so on\");</p> <p>(3) an untitled typescript draft (incomplete) of a corporate history of the Missouri Pacific Railroad;</p> <p>(4) typescript drafts (1973-74) of several chapters of an unfinished book on Union Spies conceived as a sequel to Spies of the Confederacy;</p> <p>(5) and typescript drafts of an apparently unpublished work entitled \"With Malice Towards Some, A Book of Highly Critical Essays\" which was being considered for publication in 1932 as evidenced by two letters by Bakeless (accompanying the scripts) to Alex P.
