{"value"=>"<p>The bulk of the General Correspondence (c1921-75), which is arranged alphabetically, falls in the decades 1950's-1960's. The correspondence is with historians, scholars, authors, editors, publishers, comrades-in-arms, librarians, descendants of Civil War participants, readers of Bakeless's books, his personal friends and others. The correspondence covers a variety of topics including Bakeless's historical writings; his searches for source materials; his war-time experiences as a military intelligence officer; post-war political affairs and espionage in the Balkans; the academic bureaucracy and the quality of teaching in America; and miscellaneous matters including his horticultural activities at his Connecticut farm. In the texts of his out-going letters, which are frequently copied on the verso of letters received, Bakeless often included reflections on his personal life and career.</p> <p>Included (in Container #3) is correspondence with defense attorneys relative to a charge of distributing obscene literature (copies of Erskine Caldwell's \"Tragic Ground\") brought by the Crown against the National News Co., Ltd. of Ottawa. (A copy of the judgement of the court is included). There is also correspondence relative to the immigration to the U.S. of a Bulgarian diplomat (and friend of Bakeless), Jupiter Doychev.</p> <p>There is substantial correspondence with the following persons: Julian P.
