Correspondence from the 1840s describes his early pursuit of a religious career and the dawning of his lifelong interest in local history and genealogy. Scattered items from the 1850s document Riker's work as a teacher in the New York public schools. Letters and telegrams from the 1880s provide evidence of the financial difficulties Riker faced during his final years. Prominent addressees include historian E. B.
