{"value"=>"<p>The Committee on Receiving and Forwarding Supplies (also known as the Committee on Supplies) was formed in February 1863, beginning as a subcommittee of the Executive Committee; its chair was Ellen Collins. Prior to 1863, the function of receiving and forwarding supplies had been performed by variously named subcommittees.</p> <p>Supplies were received at and forwarded from the Cooper Union storeroom. The WCAR initially recorded incoming supplies in receiving books; supplies were then unpacked and repacked by type of stock, and recorded by box number (a combination of letters and numbers) in day books. Ledgers with entries arranged by type of stock were also kept so that quantities on hand could be easily ascertained.</p>"}
