{"value"=>"<p>In 1855, the Know-Nothing party ran an obscure candidate for State Comptroller against Democratic Party stalwart Azariah C. Flagg. Flagg won by a slim majority, but the Know-Nothings contested that a clerical error in the Nineteenth Ward had resulted in 316 voted being credited to Flagg which should have been credited to Giles, and presented a number of witnesses who gave testimony to that fact. Many of the original vote tallies had been conveniently \"lost.\" Tilden analyzed the available figures and reconstructed the missing tallies, disproving the contestant's theory that votes from the Nineteenth Ward had been transposed.</p>"}
