{"value"=>"<p>Record of soldiers' applications for back pay and bounty. Volumes also list a small number of claims for arrears of pay and bounty made by relatives of deceased soldiers. Entries are arranged alphabetically by first letter of claimant surname and arranged chronologically within by date entered. Entries identify soldier’s name, rank, regiment, state, service branch, post office address, and name of person forwarding claim to ANCA (generally one of ANCA’s local agents). Entries may also include the date claim was filed, soldier’s discharge date, date check received and amount, and whether the claim was allowed, rejected, declined, abandoned, or referred elsewhere.</p> <p>A large number of back pay and bounty claims were handled by the USSC’s Special Relief Department. Their claim registers were transferred to ANCA in January 1866; however, they are not present in the collection.</p>"}
